did you use new lifters? maybe you have a flat lifter? plugged oil passage?
get a oil primer and spin it with the valve covers off and see if oil comes out all the push rods.

what was your running oil pressure, a buddy of mine built a motor and the machine shop cut the crank .040 under instead of .030 like they were suppose to and he put .030 under main bearrings in it. made alot noise with only 5lb of oil pressure
Dont forget to set your valves with them both closed

I primed the oiling system, all were good. They are brand new lifters as well. The crank clearances are good; plenty of oil pressure.

I don't know a whole lot, but would something like this help locate it? It looks like it's $4.

No it is not. It usually cost me more to fix something than the original project cost all together

Exactly. A lot times cutting corners seems nice when you are low on money, but the real lesson is when you buy a nice quality part you get what you pay for.

I agree with you to a point. Every persons budget should have some discretionary spending. Although I doubt if most of the guys who sink money into their cars budgeted correctly and put saving some money first they owuld have much left for cars.

Your rockers are pedestal mount, right? Is what lark-o said for stud mounts?

One thing I found with a new engine that I had was the person who assembled it didn't torque down all the rod caps and a few loosened up and sounded very similar to yours.

do you have full roller rockers? check preload to see if they are slapping the valves i had that problem

EDIT after watching the vid. its got to be rockers hitting the top of the valves

What is the difference from a roller rocker and a full roller rocker?

It is either a roller rocker or not.

there are only roller tipped rockers or non roller tipped rockers

Well fuck. It's getting pretty hopeless. I took out the .030 shims and put in the .060s. According to my push rod length check this should be correct. Using the .060s it is almost exactly a 1/2 turn of the bolt to 20 ft/lbs from zero lash (what most sources say is correct). It clacks just as much, if not worse now.

I was running the car with the passenger side valve cover off and all the push rods are moving ample amount of oil. After turning the car off I can walk over to a rocker that is on the base circle and rock it; i can feel the plunger spring of the lifter (like the lifter has already bled off pressure or it was never getting pressurized).

The lifters are brand new stockers. The oil looks pretty thin (possibly contaminated with gas from my earlier problems), do you think that could cause this. I am going to change it anyways, but input is nice.

yeah change oil. thinner oil actually seems to help with my valvetrain noise. some noise is normal with some aftermaket heads, cams, rockers.
when i first got my 331 going i thought there was a problem, but everything is louder with hood open and in a small garage, you hear everything.
i'd take it out for a good drive too and re-evaluate any noises.
