    DSM rebuilding.

Ok, so finally got this lunk of crap outta my laser.

Got it all torn down, washed up most of the stuff pretty good. Head came back OK no cracks or bad valves and it got a cleaning. On to the block.

Now, should i get it hot tanked? If i do, do i absolutely have to remove the frost plugs? Something i'd like to avoid not too worried about plugged up water jackets.

On the the balancer shafts, I'm being told that i can install an oilpump plug and a new pump shaft and just get rid of them. Everyone says the motor will vibrate a little more but it's well worth doing it and it's 100% reliable. Which is what im all about, i dont want to worry about timing the fuckers either!!!

I'm not planning on balancing the motor i just wanna slap this thing together and drive it until the wheels fall off. So if i have to have the thing balanced im just going to put the shafts back in. If i dont i'll run it without the shafts. Just got the thing because it was free and had a new transmission, axles, tires and exhaust put on it by my aunt.

Recomendations? Balancer shafts or no? Hot tank yes or no? and worry about the frost plugs? can i leave them in before sending them to the shop?

your insights are very helpfull to me right now!! never done this before doesnt look too challenging ofcourse i havent gotten started on putting it back together!!
Im probably going to have 1001 more questions, going to either take the motor to wagamen bro's tomorrow for the hot tanking or just clean up the surfaces and get started.

      True story. :-)

Honestly, if you just wanna slap it together, just do it and quit worrying.

Yes you should have it hot tanked and yes put new plugs into it. Its not just that easy to just take the balance shaft out and put a plug in place. You have to flip the old bearings in it and you also have to get a stub shaft to put on the back of the oil pump. If your just gonna slap it back together your not gonna get the best results. Did you get new pistons? are you going to just have it honed? Did you have the head decked? What does the thrust surface look like on the crank? Did you pull the oil squirters out and clean them up? There are a ton of things that you should do. PM me if you have any questions I've rebuilt tons of these engines.

Not sure what you have, but here's from the 1G engine overhaul part of the Factory Service Manual (specifically a 92)

I was into DSMs back before the community became mostly ricer tards. I've got copies of most of the factory service manuals through '99, send me a PM if you need something else.

leave the balance shafts out. you can buy all the parts at the dealer to do it correctly for under $50. I have taken the shafts out on a few engine that did not get balanced and you would never know.

                      www.vfaq.com will be helpful.
