What the hell is going on in Minneapolis??!?
A suspect in two overnight homicides in north Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park shot and killed himself while fleeing from police in an SUV during the morning rush hour.
About 7:15 a.m., the man crashed the SUV into a gas station sign in the 1700 block of Lake Street in south Minneapolis.
He was being chased by officers from both cities and the Hennepin County sheriff's office after being spotted at an undisclosed location in Minneapolis.
Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park police called the man "a person of interest" in the homicides.
"When someone goes on a spree like this and becomes a person of interest and takes his own life, basically, it's out of your control," said Minneapolis police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Garcia. "We were fortunate no one else was hurt."
A man waiting for a bus along Lake Street said he saw the SUV head east as more than a dozen police and sheriff's deputy vehicles trailed.
Ken Koepke said he could see the man behind the wheel and talking on his cell phone.
"It didn't look like he was trying to avoid them," Koepke said. "I think he was trying to get his last telephone calls in."
Although the chase didn't appear to exceed about 30 mph, Koepke said the man was driving through red lights.
The man shot himself before crashing the SUV, Garcia said.
The man's body was pulled out of the SUV about 10 a.m., put in a body bag and taken away by authorities in a white van. The SUV was towed away about a half-hour later and Lake Street was reopened after being closed for three hours.
About 2:30 a.m., one woman was shot to death and another was wounded in north Minneapolis.
Police reported that they were called to a home in the 1300 block of Logan Av. N. shortly after 2:30 a.m.
Officers found two women who had been shot. One was dead, and the other -- who had called 911 -- was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. She was in critical condition.
Neither woman was identified.
