Gas use would be nil. Electric bill would go up considerably. Like my economics professor use to always say, "There is no such thing as a free lunch".Originally posted by The Russinator View PostI live less then 10 miles from work. I wonder in a normal year how much gas would I need to use.
I'm not convinced that electric is the way to go. We will just end up burning more coal to generate electricity. If the power was nuclear, then it would be a viable option, but it doesnt seem like any new plants are popping up in the near future.
I'm all for improved technology in internal combustion engines both diesel and gasoline (direct injection, electronic valvetrain, etc..). We also need to get vehicle weight down as they all have an obesity problem.1988 5.0 Notchback

it would cost you no more than prob 80 bucks a month from a 110 power if the thing was plugged in and charging 24hrs a day 7 days a weekOriginally posted by Turbo302 View PostGas use would be nil. That would really suck if it consumes that much just sitting plugged in idle with a charged battery. What would it consume if you were running it compairably (miles driven) to a gasoline engine?Originally posted by OffShore View Postit would cost you no more than prob 80 bucks a month from a 110 power if the thing was plugged in and charging 24hrs a day 7 days a week
If it used its maximum charge every day (40 miles) and had to do that every day of the month (30 days), you would have used 1200 miles worth of electricity.
If you had a common current Chevrolet Malibu which got 33mpg and traveled 1200 miles you would have consumed aprox 36 gallons of gasoline. If you paid 2.39/gal you would have spent $86.
If you up the ante and used a small diesel (like Jetta TDI) which gets in the 50+mpg range then traveling 1200 miles would only take 24 gallons of diesel fuel. Even at the higher cost of say $3/gal of diesel, you would have spent $72.
Both of these examples would get compairable if not better mile/dollar than the electric cars with current technology. With future technology gas/diesels will get better mileage than ever seen.
I am just a bit sceptical that this is the solution to all our problems with petrolium fuels. What will happen to our electric bills if everyone is demanding more electricity than they can supply? The electric companys will raise prices to keep the demand in check with supply. Then there goes the cheap electricity.1988 5.0 Notchback

What's wrong with burning coal?Originally posted by Turbo302 View PostGas use would be nil. Electric bill would go up considerably. Like my economics professor use to always say, "There is no such thing as a free lunch".

I do prefer nuclear power plants but they're a tad expensive to build and many people are irrationally afraid of them… But I suppose some people are irrationally afraid of coal too.
That's expensive seeing as your scenario costs 80 dollars a month without even driving it.Originally posted by OffShore View Postit would cost you no more than prob 80 bucks a month from a 110 power if the thing was plugged in and charging 24hrs a day 7 days a week
