    Hard drive swap to different pc & oc questions...

    The problem...

    I keep thinking about building a new pc but I have several programs now that I don't have disks for to re-install....

    The test....

    Cloned my hard drive to a 2nd and installed it in a different pc, it would boot up in safe mode but not normal mode, this makes me think if I had all the drivers for the different hardware I could get it to work....

    The question....

    What are my odds of getting an already loaded hard drive to run in a new pc?

    I may just get a better vid card for the current machine and try overclocking the cpu and video, but that would give small results compared to a better machine. Currently have...

    HP Compaq d530 CMT
    3.2ghz P4 HT (Northwood core), upped from 2.6 that came with it
    2.5gb DDR400
    XFX 6600GT video card

    Northwoods are supposed to oc pretty well it looks like, except I don't think my HP mb supports it...

    Any of you guys with all the junk laying around have a socket 478 184-pin mem mb laying around you want to part with? That would allow me to play with oc'ing it, or are there other ways to do it if the board doesn't support it directly?

    Computers.....

    Not worth the trouble. Just start from scratch. If you dont have the discs try to get pirated copies.

        Actually.....

        I have an Asus P4S533 I just used for a computer build trying to get rid of some old stuff, hasn't gone out the door yet though. It currently has a P4 Northwood 1.6A overclocked @ 2.13 in it.

        But on the other hand, I kind of agree with the other posters in this thread. Nice processors are cheap these days, just get a new mobo, processor and memory and call it a day. No need to overclock then. Furthermore, I'm guessing your current board is AGP, so if you are thinking about getting a better video card anyways, you can get a decent PCIe card.

          Just buy new shit. You can put together a decent rig for 500.00.

          E8400 = 150.00
          4 gigs of Corsair DDR2 800 is something like 40.00
          HDD = 100.00
          Case 40.00
          Video card depends
          Mobo = 150.00 or less

          The end.

                    You can use your old hard drive and operating system in a new pc. There are problems with doing it though.

                    You'll have to install the drivers that come with the new motherboard.

                    If you're running windows XP home edition you might have liscensing problems. I'm not sure of the exact number, but I know there's something in xp that only allows a certain number of hardware changes before you have to get new serial number from microsoft.

                      oh c'mon dude, 500 bucks for a new computer ain't that much. Even compared to Best Buy or CC that isn't bad.

                      Fine.

                      Keep your old HDD and use your old case.

                      Knock off 100 bucks off the total.

                      There you go.

                      400 bucks.

                      Knock of even more if you get 1 gig of RAM.

                      I guess the E8400 isn't even necessary. you can get by with something for less...but I love this CPU.

                        Stuff I don't have disks for would be Office 2003, Outlook 2003, and Autocad 2004. I have an XP disk buts its a pc system disk (works only on this pc?).

                          I just downloaded and ran 3DMark06 and got a whopping 465...

                          Doesn't seem possible that I can play Half-Life 2, etc... without problem, better check all my connections since I just had the power supply out and back in....
