I'm not an expert but when I worked at BBY there was a little note in some of my employee handbook or whatever that MN employees and a few other states could wear a different uniform provided for free.
I'm assuming there's some law saying the employer can't require you to pay for a uniform and must offer a free alternative.1998 Buick Lesabre Custom

If you get stuck paying, make sure that the money is taken out before taxes so that you don't have to deduct them on your tax return. Like mentioned, many won't be able to use it as a tax write off.
I agree that the company should pay for it or allow you to provide something on your own that looks similar. For instance, they should allow you the choice of providing your own pants if they are close to what they need you to wear. It wasn’t the policy when you started and you shouldn’t have to pay for it, especially if it reduces the income that you had previously agreed upon. It’s simply another way of reducing your pay.
Also, the way it appears that they went about it isn't the best way to gain the employees trust either which typically ends up biting them in the ass in the end. If they had included the employees in the decision making that would be a different story. The employees had no say in ways to reduce the cost and the company could care less.

i also have to buy my own uniforms, sucks. When i started we got a 300.00 allowance and everything they make you buy to start out with equals about 250. 25 per paycheck comes out of it. i need replacements as time goes on, but still sucks, especially when our shirts and pants have an "a" on them, so they have to be bought from our uniform store instead of walmart or target. they'll find that if we get uniform inspections. a pair of pants runs about 50.00 dollars"queen bee of the power tour mafia"
