Our service techs have uniforms but the company pays for them.

This really is kind of small change. But when you have a few of these add up you may start to understand why shops unionized. It was not so guys could pay due s but so the worker had some protection.

I just got home from a mountain bike ride. I was wearing my uniform shirt. I wear them whenever I ride. They are tough, not cotton, free, and best of all I don't have to wash them

Oh ya; I don't have to pay for my uniform though. IF I did I would be upset. And if I was paying for it I would wear jeans and a work shirt, and shorts in the summer.

I'd say they can do that.

A workplace can require a suit and tie, and I doubt you would find an employer who would pay for that.

But if it's some shirt that says "XXXX COMPANY" the employer SHOULD (but not have to) pay for it, or at least give the employees a yearly supply of them....if you wear through them prematurely then charge you.

Say you're muslim and the uniforms are not kosher with your ethnic dress. If he gives you lip sue him for discrimination. If he gives you a gaping mouth open look when you say that. Tell him yes, I will go there.

it is deductible if you itemize.

But seriously if you just bought uniforms, I would talk with him and try to either work something out or get some leniency.

Do you actually WORK for a living?

Does your clothes get dirty? or wrecked?

                    Hell, 14.00/week is not bad.

Go buy enough jeans to wash and keep clean .

Any decent place likes to have their employees to have decent clothes.
Perhaps you or the people you work with wear CRAP to work?

I used to have to wear a suit for work and never got paid for it. They said the clothing allowance was already "built into my salary". Umm, right....

Its pretty typical in the auto business for people to pay for there uniforms, might as well bitch about having to put gas in your car to get to work too

I forgot to mention that we used to go through a uniform service for the shirts and pants but now we (the company) purchases the shirts and has the names and the logo embroidered on them. It ended up being cheaper in the long run to purchase them outright and replace the uniforms as needed rather than use the uniform service.

Grow up and get over it. I've never worked anywhere that gave me free work clothes. I've had requirements, shirt, tie, pants, company shirts, etc. Never once did I get paid for them or the cleaning of them.

Like everyone said, if the company requires it, you can write it off on your taxes.

Why don't you ask him where he is coming from? Hell, you may find out he's splitting the cost with you/ You don't know until you ask. There might be a reason. If you don't like the reason or the change or anything, find another job. Hell, work for the uniform company, they might give you free uniforms.

I'm betting some clown pissed him off with something he wore. Go find said clown and beat him up and steal ~$700 to pay for your uniforms. BTW, I would never go to a shop where the people in the shop don't wear uniforms, it looks unprofessional and unorganized. Just like I expect at Walmart they wear their ghey blue vests and at Target they wear their red shirt with khaki pants.
Do you know who I really am?

I agree. I have had a lot of jobs were I pay for at least part of my uniforms. I think uniforms make any place look more organized and professional and I think it improves the team attitude. Dont quit or sue or anything like that tak to the guy maybe he will split it with your guys or something.
