Temporal Mandibular Joint disorder. Basically the right side of my jaw hurts all the time, comes unhinged and locks if i'm not careful chewing, swallowing, brushing my teeth, etc. I wouldn't wish this shit on anyone.
Joe, General dentists can make a soft mouth guard for him and it won’t cost as much but it also is a soft mouth guard and not a hard one so he will go through them faster. Some medical insurance will cover TMJ issues depending on your friends case.
He could try the U of M?
Joe,
We did have a Facial Pain Clinic that is now part of PDG(Park Dental Group). I would try the soft mouth guard it will bring relief a lot of the time it just doesn’t last as long and eventually he will grind through it. Depending on how severe it is they will often prescribe muscle relaxers to relax the muscle and give the mouth guard a chance to work.
Down the road he can get a hard one which is more expense but work better and will last much longer.
Some people do OK starting with the over the counter mouth guards and a steady dose of ibuprofen the mouth guards are only $20.00 bucks or so.

a couple of the responses thus far.Concensus seems to be some insurance companies DO cover it. If you can't get it covered, look into the U of M (As said before)
