Anyone have/had TMJ?

I've done some internet research but i was wondering if anyone here has dealt with this. I have no health insurance so i'd rather not go to the doctor/dentist so they can charge me for info i already know. I went to buy a night time mouth guard butit says on the package not to use it if you have TMJ. :idiot: Any real world experience/advice would be very appreciated. I'm tired of my jaw locking up and the discomfort.

My mom has it and uses a night mouthguard but it is one made by the dentist so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Nope, it is TMJ according to a dentist. He wants to make me a mouth guard but being uninsured that's not an option.

According to the dentist it can cause more damage. He wants to make me a custom molded bite plate which is around $300 but i'm between jobs so that isn't an option. Just thought i'd see if anyone tried anything else with any amount of success.

My wife has bad TMJ problems. She is actually far passed having a mouthguard make any difference for her. She used to do physical therapy twice a month, then once a month, and now they've told her there's no hope of it getting better.

If they think the mouthguard will help then it really is worth the investment -- down economy, money's tight, and by no means should/can/will I ever criticize anyone's decision about this stuff. TMJ problems can get a LOT worse.
