Collector plates are supposed to be used only to and from car shows and the like. While most cops won't enforce it if you are out cruising, it's just one more thing they can pull you over on.

    I returned mine. Too restrictive.
Agree, but as stated how can they tell if they want to pull you over they will anyways

I keep hearing that "collectors plates can only be on the car if you drive it to and from car shows only" or "Your limited to a certain amount of miles per year" scenario. Where exactly does it say that, because I've never seen that in writing.

Maybe your ins company might limit the mileage, but I have never seen anywhere in the state writing anything close to the above statements, other than it can not be used for general transportation. I read that as, can not be used as a daily driver.
You have been banned for the following reason:
Yeah, I'm really tried of cleaning up after you.
Date the ban will be lifted: Never

If you car qualifies as a collector, but is used as general transportation (i.e. you pay for a regular plate) it looks legal to only have it displayed on the rear of the vehicle.
Not all collector vehicles. A collector vehicle is a broad description of vehicles that may qualify for a pioneer license, classic license, street rod license, or collector plate. Your car only qualifies for a collector plate (168.10 subd. 1c). 169.79 clearly states you may display only one plate if the vehicle is registered with collector plates and not used for general transportation; or if used for general transportation, but meeting the requirements for a street rod, pioneer, classic license, or collector plate manufactured in 1972 or earlier, but displaying a regular plate. So the exemption only applies to those vehicles meeting the requirements of 168.10 subd.1a, 1b, 1d, and only those in 1c that are 1972 or older. So, if your car is 20-years old, but manufactured after 1972, you must have the vehicle registered as a "collector" to display only one plate.

168.10 states the registrant must execute an affidavit stating, "that the vehicle is owned and operated solely as a collector's item and not for general transportation purposes." The statute doesn't state you can only drive to car shows, it just says you can only use it as a collector and not for "general transportation". Unfortunately, that language is fairly ambiguous and seems to leave the interpretation of "general transportation" and what constitutes operation as a collector vehicle, to an officer, or the court if a ticket is challenged. I was unable to find any court or legislative history relating to this interpretation of "general transportation" or "collector use" under 168.10.

Wow! I failed miserably in my attempt to make the wording of the statute easier to read.

To sum it up, if your car is 20-years old, but manufactured after 1972, you must have the vehicle registered as a "collector" to display only one plate. And, nowhere in the statute does it say you can only drive to car shows. It only says that you need to execute an affidavit saying that the vehicle will be used as a collector and not for general transportation. The question remains, what is "collector use" and what is "general transportation?" I display two "regular" plates because I'd rather not have Barney Fife interpret those terms.

Wrong, i'm running a dealer plate on my car which only requires one license plate on the rear of the car. I ran that on my mustang for a year, then went to a normal plate so i could get a custom one. I still only run one plate even with the normal plates, i haven't got any crap for it. There is not a spot to put it on the front bumper either. If i do get crap, i'll just go back to the dealer plates

You're right. Most people have no idea what the fuck they're talking about when it comes to collector plates. The statute says you must have another registered and insured vehicle to be considered your daily driver and that the collector plates can be revoked at anytime for misuse but misuse is a total grey area since no other rules are listed.

Ask v869TR6 about collector plates and the law...

Well, to most people, general transportation means going to the store, driving to work or school, maybe driving to Porky's (depending on how assholish the cop is), etc.

When I am driving home form a bartending shift at 3:30am, reeking of booze, the last thing I want is a cop pulling me over because of his interpretation of the law. If you ask a DMV employee what the use is, they will tell you it is used for car shows and car enthusiast related activities, or something like that.

collector plates - the car needs to be 20 years old, only a rear plate is required. but there are restrictions as to how often you can drive your car as well. I just went to get some with a buddy. I dont think they check or can check your driving habits but....just call the dmv

                    I have collectors plates.

I have my plates properly mounted. One on the car, one on the wall in my office.

As long as you dont drive it EVERY day or in winter you won't get bugged.....That is assuming arent a complete jackass while driving your car also.

In the 7 years I have been running collector plates I have not been asked once how many miles I have driven.

Also please note....If you have collectors plates and get collectors insurance to where you are limited to shows/parades/events and you get into an accident on your way to work, prepare to get fucked.

I run my car to work, to the store and anywhere, doing nothing different than before with collectors plates and have never gotten fucked with.

I recently just purchased collector plates for my '87 GT. The following is a response I received from Minnesota Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist on the matter...
"The law states that Collector Plates are for vehicles that are driven more for fun then everyday transportation. If you drove your car to work I don't think you will get stopped as we would not know where you are going. If someone complains that you have Collector Plates and drive in to work every day, we would have to check into it. We don't just stop people who have Collector Plates. We see classic cars driving around during the summer a lot with Collector Plates that don't get stopped.

Basically.. like has been already said... there is a large gray area in the law surrounding collector plates. I am not too concerned with them on my car. I only drive the car about 3,000 miles or less a year and only on nice weather days.
