      I CHANGE MY OWN OIL!!!
My parents sold an older Lincholn town car to a friend, and he called me wondering wht he wasn't able to change the oil.
The drain plug kept spinning, but wasn't coming off.

We got it off, only to see that it was waaaay to big. Apparently my dad had brought it into a j-lube, and they must've dropped/lost the original plug, found another one, and used the impact gun to make sure it fit.

I'm glad the oil pan didn't have the threads stripped out, just the replacement plug the bozo crammed in there...

My starter apparently went out in my F-150.
right in a school fire lane. Couldn't push it w/o help, and noone except my 7 yr old was there...
I towed it to PT in New Hope. THey tell me $400 for a new starter!!!
I had to get a ride to work, but called for a starter and found reman w/ lt warr for 130. Called them back to ask why so high?
$300.00 for the part, and 100 labor he tells me.
I asked if that was an OEM starter or reman...
Reman, OEM is alot more, he replied.
What time do you guys close so I can get you the keys?
          6:00, he replied.
I got the 130.00 starter, and changed it out in their parking lot after 6.

I'll be DAMNED if I'll pay 400 for three bolts and a connector!!
But I bet the bill would've been 600 if I was an old lady or asian!!

First of all, who the fuck uses an impact gun to do an oil change. If you need a gun to loosen it or tighten it, you should not be touching cars. EVER.

I removed the starter, and put it back in once the longtubes were in this weekend. The top bolt was a huge fucking bitch, but even with the ground wire and the two bolts that held it in, it took maybe 10-15 minutes. I can't imagine your starter was any harder to finagle into place than mine. Think about it this way. If you say no, fuck you, I'm not paying that much. Imagine how many people do... probaly alot that know no better. What a rip off.

I'm at the point where I'll blow a whole wknd working on it myself rather than spin the roulette wheel on mechanics.
I'd rather know I'm not getting buttsecksed and blow a wknd and learn something new than walk funny for three days.

Agreed, but is there is no other way a drain plug can have NO THREADS left on it unless you used an air impact...

It's sad that this sort of thing actually happens. My gramps knew a lady who had a newer car and had problems opening the drivers side door. She took it to the dealership to have it looked at and they estimated about 800 to get the door fixed. She then went to a local shop on her way home and asked them for an estimate. The young man walked out to her car, opened the door, loosened the door, adjusted the swing, and retightened it. When she asked what that would cost he said free of charge, have a nice day. The guy almost fell over laughing when she told him the dealership quoted her 800 to do what he had just done in 2 min free of charge..

Some places employ honest people that are looking out for you, some dont..

Whenever I bring a vechile into the shop to do work I cannot do at home (mostly front end alignments) I go to the small local shops, talk to the owners for a bit and ask to be able to watch them work on my vechile. I've never been turned down and have always had exelent work done.

I worked w/ an asian guy who had an 89 GT.
One day after work he asked me:
"how many boo to take off da bell". (Not making fun of asian people, just getting the accent in.)
                          ME: Wha?
Anyway, he wanted to know how many bolts you needed to take off the serpentine. I told him none, and he looked confused. I used my mag lite to loosen the tensioner and showed him how easy it was.
