Removing rear axle ABS ring to install new studs?

    Removing rear axle ABS ring to install new studs?

    Any trick to doing it without destroying it? I need to throw longer studs in.

    Or, I've heard some people grind one side of the head of the stud flat? Bad idea?

    Got a picture of this setup? Might be as simple as a bearing seperator and a hydraulic press.

      not yet, hopefully get around to pulling the axles tonight or tomorrow. The bearing separator was one idea that was thrown my way.

        Yeah, looks like it should just pop off that shoulder. We'll see how easy it actually goes - everything I see says buy a new one when putting in new axles (even though they're like $45 a pop from Ford from what I've read).

          Go through steve at AVF or steve at tousley. 10% over cost. If I remember right, mine was 27ish about 3 years ago. I did new axles and I couldnt get my old one off. I had a heck of a time getting it back on. I used a fence post down the whole axle shaft and a 10 pound sledge to get it to seat on there. It was a bitch.

            I guess we'll see how it goes. Going to try to press it off tomorrow I think. Need to get it off so I can throw new studs in. New axles just aren't in the budget this year (and I figure I should at least break something before I start replacing them).

              Heat the center ring once it is all setup to press apart. No need to go crazy with the heat. A propane torch should be enough to help it along. The best thing looks like a three jaw pulled but good luck finding one with jaws long enough.

                Guess I got lucky. 2 pieces of angle iron on either side of the ring and a press and the popped right off. an hour and I had them both pressed off, studs pressed in, and the rings knocked back on.
