I was setting the timing. First, I was having some trouble with that because I wasn't sure whether you're supposed to line up the mark with the top of the triangle thing with the round hole or the other pointer looking thing. Second, the mark looked like it was white out, which means it could be the right one, or it could not be. Anyway, I lined it up with the top of the angle on the triangle thing. The engine seemed to be running best here. I took it for a ride and the surging was gone. When i got home, i remembered I had not reinstalled the spout connector. I plugged it back in and the surging was back. WTF? I took a quick look for a vacuum leak, but did not find one.

Well, something i did fixed the white smoke. i'm not sure which because I never ran it for long enough to clear the coolant out of the exhaust until after I'd done the lower intake gaskets and changed the oil for the 3rd time. It still smoked a little running cold yesterday, not nearly like before, but i'm going to call it good for the summer. I don't drive it that much anyway. Maybe this winter i'll do the head gaskets.
Anyway, i'll look for vacuum leaks again, and try the carb cleaner. And the top of the thing with the round hole in it is where i put the timing, so I think i should be good there. If that mark is right, anyway.

did you put a new gasket on the idle air control valve? my old 87 would have a "floating" idle(below idle and like up to 1700) and i replaced the IAC and all was fixed
you could try cleaning the IAC to...71 Dodge Demon Green/Blk big turbo slant 6 in progress

use propane and stop getting carb cleaner all over your engine. It does the same thing without the mess.Originally posted by HackWhy spend all that money just to get a worn out copy of a small block Ford? It's going to be in the junk yard for a reason. I understand you have a religion called LS motors and you have faith that the LS motors break the laws of physics and work better and cost less than anything else ever built. Plus they never wear out.
I disagree.

Yes it does, the only downside being that the propane can collect in low spots and ignite if there is an ignition source. Same goes for everything else, just be careful.Originally posted by TRDon View Postuse propane and stop getting carb cleaner all over your engine. It does the same thing without the mess.

spray that shit near every gasket and listen for the rpms to change, it will either bog or run smoother if you hit a leak.
