93 Escort 1.8L Broken Speedo Gear Fell into Transmission

My axle seal was leaking. I pulled the axle and replaced the seal. I then went to refill the trans via the speedo sensor/gear (that's how you do it on these 1.8l mazda engines). When I pulled the sensor/gear assembly (looks like a standard ford VSS) out the gear didn't come with because it broke below the clip. It fell into the case and I can't see it at all.

I figure I have 2 options. Replace the gear and let the other plastic one get crushed and hope the trans survives. Or remove the trans and split the case.

Recommendations?

No way you can probe around in the case with something? The correct thing to reccomend is probably that it needs to come out of there but nobody wants to do that. (including myself) OrangeCrush it up, change fluid, change fluid again. If it drops to the bottom, chances are it will be fine there. If any chunks were to find their way through the pump, bad stuff is going to happen.

I dropped a plastic gear lube bottle cap in my front diff and could not get it out. It has been great for 3 years since. "Friction Modifier"

This is true, whenever i dick around inside of a diff i drop some bullets in the bottom. It keeps you on your toes.

The gear broke below the clip, so I have the metal clip and a little green ring. They gear half is in the case.

It's a 5 speed so there is no pump.

I have time to get back to it now. I'm going to try to drain all the fluid to see if I can see it. Otherwise I think I might pull the trans and see if I can tip it upside down to get the gear to fall back out.

I drained the fluid. I can't see the gear any where. Fuck I don't want to take this bitch out as I just had it out to do the clutch. Maybe it's time for a new car.

Drive it for 10k, it will come out when you drain the fluid.
