I have done one before and it can be kind of tricky. Make sure you get the right recoil rope. I got some from fleet farm and it was too thick causing problems. I finally got the right stuff from all power sports. Also check the plastic rope guides. They will wear out and cause the rope to wear out.

Ace Hardware actually usually carries recoil rope in bulk. Just be careful not to pop the clockspring out, they can be a bitch to rewind and get back in.
i will check the ace in my town. They really are teh helpful place arent they!
How long does a snowmbile usually need for the rope?
It's actually my brothers sled, I am just going to help him out by working on it tomorrow, he is too busy with all his kids.
I would probably get 4 feet or more. You can always cut off the extra, if Ace has it, should be pretty cheap. You don't want to wind too much in the recoil or it may bind. I usually save both parts of the old rope and copy that. Bring a piece of the old rope with ya for width comparison. It might be tricky to do the first time but its a handy thing to know how to do.
It can be a pain in the ass, it would be really hard to explain cause you have to wind the spring up. Have someone do it that knows what they are doing, it will save you alot of swear words.
they're really not that hard, but the first time it can be a major pita because you don't know what you're doing. if the rope is already broken then the spring already unwound itself. but it's just a few screws to get the recoil itself off typically, then you just have to mess around for a while, wind the spring enough so it pulls the rope in easily, but not too tight to wear it binds.
and yeah the rope thickness and length are both important.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
