    Automatic Trans Rebuilding

Does anyone know of a good book or videos for rebuilding ford automatic transmissions?

Needs to be geared towards first time builders, as I have never cracked one open. I have 2 now that need to be gone through and Im NEVER going to pay to have it done again. Its time I learned how, hands on exp. would be best, but I dont know anyone doing one anytime soon.

    Let me know.

I've used a Haynes manual to rebuild a C4 before, its pretty easy.

I just bought the TCI master rebuild kit, however I used a B&M rebuild kit for a TH350 and it was nice too.

What are you rebuilding, an E40D/AOD? Personally I would say fuck that noise and PM blue indian. TH 350s/400 and C-4/C-6 seem easy.

get a book for end play settings, adjustments, torque specs, and clutch pack clearances. Other than that, put it back togeather the way you found it and you'll be fine.

              what are we rebuilding?

Edit: dayco detroit probably has just about every manual you could need. they are near the uni/vandalia intersection.

LOL there are 1700 moving aprt in an automatic transmission and if you even put one bearing in backward it smoke the whole damn thing. ha ha unless ur a certified tech i wouldn't rebuild it myself. I am ASE certified in automatic transmissions and i still hate to think about a total overhaul well GOOD LUCK. but as far as instructions MITCHELL or ALLDATA

I rebuilt/modded my C4 and it works fan-fuckin-tastic. First solo trans rebuild i've ever done.

I wouldn't say there is 1700 moving parts in an auto-trans. your foxbody era and older automatics are pretty basic (C3-4-5-6, AOD etc). If your really worried about fucking up, use your digital camera and take a pic every time you remove something, lay it out on the bench in an "Exploded view" manner and you shouldn't screw it up...

I was 17 when I rebuilt the TH350 in my Regal..... since then I've beat the fuck out of it and it has seen 40+ passes down the 1/4 and still works great.

I Pmed a few C4s gurus on another forum, discussed the 2-3 shift flare problem on the C4s and re-worked at 5 clutch forward drum. As far as a manual i used an old-school chilton manual that i'm sure is older than i am (it covers 1960s-80s vehicles), but i looked up the specs for a 70s C4, however i ignored the clutch pack clearances and reccomended fluid specs, in favor of tighter clutchs and a totally different trans fluid.

I really only used the manual for end play and torque specs, even then some torque specs were ignored. For example, I've almost never been able to hit the torque specs on the bellhousing/pump bolts on a C4 with out taking the threads out of the case. So i time-certed all my pump bolt holes, now i can torque it to spec just fine lol.

I've been meaning to pick up a builder C4 core for my car for a while now. Was thinking about doing a mild performance oriented rebuild myself to save the money for the swap parts.

Make sure you get a '70 and later C4 with the larger diameter 26 spline input shaft........ case fill too if your worried about clearance.
