Can you CFC a 2.3 Mustang?

Not that I have one or would do it, but today I was at Johns Auto Parts and in the CFC Section (Cash For Clunker) I seen a 91? LX Convertible. I was only able to get the Mustang Logo off the dash to put on my 89. Then someone told me I couldn't be back there. As for parts I wouldn't recommend looking at it even if you could go back there. Guy told me to talk to the manager Bob about it if I wanted parts. It did have a Convertible top with it but as for condition I couldn't tell you as I wasn't interested enough in it. Had the porno red interior. Seats were okay, Dash was good, bumper and other body parts, forget about it. TailLights were smashed in and cracked to hell. Rims were good after market rims but were missing center caps on all four rims.

I was just wondering if a 91 LX with a 2.3 could be a CFC qualifier as I thought they were trying to get rid of fuel inefficient cars?

Are you sure it wasn't a 5.0 LX?

      Only the 5.0/MT qualifies
When we got to my place, I already had a candle burning. It was by "Glade", which I think you pronounce like the singer Sade, because it is an exotic candle that smells just like real pine.

I didn't look under the hood but it had a 85 mph gauge cluster. I thought for every 5.0 they put the 140 one in? But I could be wrong. And it didn't have any 5.0 emblems on nor did it look like there were any on it at one time.

I'm pretty sure it was a 2.3. And maybe they just set the stang over there but wasn't a CFC car. who knows

The 85 mph cluster was a pre 1990 thing on all cars, and then it was only featured on 4 bangers after that.

I have an 89 GT that came with a stock 140 mph cluster. And I know that that was either a 1990 or later model in the junk yard because it had the mustang emblem on the dash, My 89 didn't come with that. And I wanna say it was a 1990 that came with that emblem, or 91 that came with it. So I kinda figure that was a 4 popper. Can you tell by looking at a Gauge Cluster which year mustang it came out of? The previous owner wasn't really one to mod his mustang, So I doubt he put a new one on. but possible.

It must have been 1989 that they switched over then. And just look at the door tag to see what year it is.

                  Incorrect.

In fact, I had an 87 with a 140mph speedo. I think it was part of some option package?

140 was only a SSP option until 1990.

Here is the 100% accurate truth on this subject speedo/dash emblem subject...

The 87-89 SSP "Police" Mustangs had a 160mph "certified calibration" speedometer.

All 87-89 1/2 Civilian Mustang 5.0 had 85mph speedos from the factory

Sometime mid production 1989 5.0 Cars got the 140 mph speedo which carried out until 1993. The 1989 1/2 cluster is unique as it has the style of the 1987-1989 but with the 140mph.

1987-1990 (possible early 1991) had a different oil pressure guage that read 0-100 versus L-H (Low to High) on the guage.

The running horse dash emblem came about in mid production 1989. Most figure all Mustangs built from April 17 1989 to April 17 1990 got the running hores with "25 years" engraved in the bottom where the rest the production through 1993 got the standard running horse.

I've had many a Mustang from this generation and have documented the small differences. I could be a restoration judge someday and subtract points for inaccurate builds

I had a friend with an 1989 just like yours. I bet it was made sometime around early 1989 (like between 1/89-4/89) as it had the larger speedo but lacked the dash emblem.

So, according to this, since the person that I bought my 1987 from, who himself bought it when it was only a year old, did not modify the car in any way, the only way the car could have a 140mph speedo is if the original owner that bought it new jumped into their time machine, and went forward into the future, took a 140mph speedo out of a 89+ fox, went back in time, and put it into their brand new 1987 Mustang?
