Differences between 94-98 and 99-04 8.8 rear ends?

I have a Fox body 8.8 with 94-98 SN95 axles (and disc brakes) that I'm looking to trade for an '03 IRS. The guy who wants my 8.8 is looking for a 99-04 spec as apparently these cars had a slightly longer axle length. My direct question is what are the differences between the 94-98's to the 99-04's 8.8 rear ends? My secondary question is, can my rear end be rebuilt with parts to meet the 99-04 track width?

    Thanks, Mike

Well, for starts, all the bearings/seals are the same throughout '79-04. They all have T-loks. The only difference to my knowledge is the actually axle shafts and brake parts. Ya know... caliper mounting brackets, rotors, brake lines, dust shields, calipers, etc... I know the '94-98 are 3/4 inch longer then '79-93 axles. And the '99-04 are even longer yet over the '94-98 axles. Good luck!

I'm not sure on this, but I know that the axles in the IRS 8.8s aren't held in with c-clips like all the previous stuff. but I think the limited slip is still the same because I saw them on FMS and they work with other rear ends. I'm sure some cobra owners know the exact difference and how the axles are held in. I don't.

I have an auburn ECTED in my notch that is for an 8.8 IRS car, but it worked in my setup cause I have c-clip eliminators holding the axles out at the wheel bearings.

looking back this isn't even the question.

WHY are u trading for an IRS??? and yes to your other question.

Got a post going on Corral and some of those guys are stating the tube lengths are longer on the 99-04's...while all brake parts are the same.

I'm looking to go IRS because I HATE how the solid axle behaves in daily driving. I want something more comfortable to drive with, I really don't care about track times (drag or road race).

Well, I'm led to believe you may not know it all ...I read your post and see nothing about the axle tubes, just that axle lengths vary, which I was aware of. I've heard from people whom I think are reputable sources on corral claim the tube lengths did change from the 94-98 to the 99-04 rear end.

I'd imagine someone could use a 94-98 with a wheel that has less backspacing and be fine. I am contemplating weather I should go the 94-98 or 99-04 solid axle route in the LSX Clone car. Seems like you can find the 94-98's cheaper.

Thanks guys for helping to clear things up. Doodler, I'll be talking with you soon about your swap, but am a bit busy right now with work to list all my questions...anyway, I like your drawings, I'll leave with a little sketch I did the other day...nothing great or finished.
