Painting wheels - what kinda paint?

About to sand blast and paint some steel wheels... what all do I need to do? Any particular paints (rattle can, i don't have a spray gun) that are less likely to flake? Do I need to spray on some primer? Not gonna be exactly a show vehicle, but don't want them flaking off after a week...

Rattle can is never a good thing .

You can have some Auto paint mixed up in a can & use a cut in clear coat - About $15 per can but,,, They have way more pigments than your typical bomb can & will cover more area.........

You will need to use a etch primer & a filler primer for best color coverage ......

Prep is your best defense against flaking ...... Make sure you sand the primer with 600 grit before color coat

But the best spray paints IMO are the Rustoleum line -- Anything over $5 a can..........

You could have them powdercoated for about $120. Pretty sure there is someone in your area. CL has a few ads.

Sweet. do i need to buy that rattle can primer too, or just the paint itself?

I never primed the wheels I painted. However, most of the wheels I painted were aluminum. Personally I wouldn't prime them, I think the sandblasted texture helps the Rustoleum adhere.

Be sure to do 2 coats. Do the second coat about 2 hours after the first. Rustoleum takes a long time to dry (at least 24 hours).

Wish I had a bigger oven, I could powdercoat them for you.

Pretty close too. It's always worth a good result, plus someone will want them when you are done with them.

i used 2 coats of walmart primer(colorplace or something like that) and 2 coats of colorplace aluminum and 2 coats of krylon brand clear

cleaning the wheels in between each coat and they turned out great

i also pressure washed them before and scraped any tar or debris off before painting

Dupli color high performance wheel paint. Works great on every wheel I've seen and done (just did another set in black on Tuesday they turned out great). Overall seem to not chip much at all from the sets I've seen and done.

I used some polyurethane plasti-kote wheel paint from fleet farm. Only comes in a few colors but has held up for me for years. Don't drive it in the winter though.
