Some people run 315/35 Nittos on 9" wheels, since I guess they run a little narrower than most (talk to Wiplash). Some people don't recommend it though.
285 would be my limit. Your best bet though, would be to look at the specs pages for the tires your looking at. That will tell you the recomended rim widths. It's usually best to stay within the manufacture's limits too.

I actually had my 315's mounted on a 17x8.5" Corvette wheel, looked a little weird but it worked! I guess what you can do and what's safe are two different things, 315's will be perfectly fine unless you want to hang some corners? There's people that autocross with DR's but with properly sized tires/wheels like 275 on a 9".

I don't know how wide you can go, but I do remeber reading somewhere, if you go too wide your sidewalls will convex. Reducing your cornering abilities. That was your goal right Brian?
Not too pick on Tim, but his Nitto's are a perfect example. Even though Tim's ride is a Drag car, and you need some extra rubber on the road. I think his tires are a bit big for the rim, and this may be part of his launching problem.
