331 is in, need help with dizzy and crank pulley

    2 major setbacks.

The distributor will not drop all the way in, the stops it from seating. It is like the gear needs to be moved up. The gear is pinned though so I have no idea how to adjust this. Please help. Pics below:

The other problem is that the crank pulley is WAY off. I bought a Scat rotating assembly prebalanced so they supplied the balancer and flywheel. Everything installed fine, but the stock crank pulley needs to stick out almost an additional inch. Do they sell a spacer? Do I need a different pulley? Did I get the wrong balancer? Pic:

    1. Cam installed has larger distributor gear?
    2. Did Ford have short snout cranks?

Only thing I have found so far is this (http://www.cobralads.com/2006/04/why_sb_ford_dis.html) article, but he is talking about an MSD dizzy. This is odd I have never had this happen before. Maybe the 86 dizzy is a different length?

Is this a new motor? The oil pump shaft could be to long. What balancer do you have? Some balancers require spacer.

Here is a link for differnt spacers.

Here is a link to find out if your distributor gear is on correct.

you sure its not just because your distributor isn't dropping all the way down on your oil pump shaft? I know I have ran into that problem before. just hold the distributor down and have someone click the key over until it drops down all the way.

Can you see if the distributor will drop in in the wrong orientation? The hex shaft has to line up in addition to the gear meshing. BTW- I completed the Conceal Carry course yesterday.

the gear shouldn't be stopping the assembly from dropping down at all. that gear could slide right past the cam altogether if it was allowed.

sounds like you're getting hung up on the oil pump shaft, either you're hitting the shaft and not slipping over it, or you're bottomed out on it. i'd keep trying, wiggle the rotor a bunch, or try turning the pump shaft a little to getthe distributor to drop over the shaft.

i like to assemble all those parts with the engine on the stand in case of problems like this.

I'll try those things. This is the first engine I've assembled completely so I'm learning.

I guess I hit a pitfall thinking the stock 5.0 dizzy would go between identical 302 blocks with no problems. Next time I will install the dizzy on the stand before the cam is installed to check the dizzy gear clearence between that thrust surface like you are supposed to.

I'm hoping the oil pump shaft just isn't lining up because I can't believe 2 302 blocks could be over an 1/8th inch off for the dizzy gear clearence.

I guess I need a spacer for the balancer. I think it is a power products balancer. It is maybe a 1 5/8 inch thick.

                  Thanks.

I found what is stopping the dizzy. The little clip that goes over the oil pump drive shaft so it can't fall out through the dizzy hole is up too high, so the end of the dizzy is hitting the clip. It is not bottoming out in the dizzy shaft.

Is there a way to move the clip down without taking the engine all the way apart? Or do I have to take out the oil pump drive shaft and cut it shorter?

that clip will just slide down the shaft. if you're sure that is what is holding the distributor up, just push it down with the distributor.

or you could do it with a deep socket or the right size piece of pipe, but i'd just push it down with the distributor.

I measured the depths of everything with my vernier. As far as the numbers go the distance to the clip is short by a ways. Almost a .2 inches.

I'll see if I can push it down.

I got the distributor in. I pushed the clip down with a socket. Thanks for the help.
