I have one what do you want to know? 200000 miles and still runs, the viscus coupling goes out in the transfer case I know that.

What year XJ is the AW4 coming out of? If it's OBDI like your ZJ is, you might be able to just bolt it up and splice in the TCM from wherever the AW4 came from. 1993 ZJs used the AW4 as well.

Good luck. The AW4 is a much much much nicer transmission than the 42RE so hopefully you can find the info you need to do the swap.

Thanks for the link. Yeah the ol' AW4 is a pretty bullet proof trans. Best info i have seen yet. Looks easier/cheaper than i thought it would be. I do not own ZJ in question or have an AW4, just really thinking of buying one: My old roommates heep, not particularly nice but a solid 4.0 runner and cheap. He just toasted the trans and wants it gone. I'm just trying to decide if its worth my time.

Its would be a far tow home for me. If i pass for this reason I'll give info to anyone interested.

I sure hope it's really that cheap. Still a lot of screwing around considering XJs are a dime a dozen.

Very true. Its a dark green Larado with good tires, maintained w clean title. Wants $300. I bet i could get this turd going w/ AW4 for an extra $400 or so..= Same price as as your average xj..

Depending on the amount of screwing around you have to do to swap in an AW4, maybe spend an extra few bucks and find an AX15 with pedal assembly and shifter? Besides being even stronger of a trans, you'd have a novelty factor too. "Nice ZJ. Hey, what kind of a shif - wait, wat?"

AX15 would be really cool, even sweeter to have a stick XJ. Why do some people seem to call the AX15 junk?? Seems like the AW4 would be an easier/cheaper swap. The wiring part doesn't really scare me, especially since it has been done before. (would be all OBD 1 stuff) I do prefer a manual... Hrm. You want this thing storm? I'd prob do it, but place to store it is also an issue now...

                  Just rebuild the 42RE.

With the proper upgrades, it will last the rest of the life of the vehicle.

Its just a Mopar 904 with an OD unit stuck to the back of it.

Super easy trans to rebuild without many special tools required. Its about as easy as rebuilding a C4 Ford.

                    Who calls the AX15 junk?

I have enough Jeeps, and I want to do some more stuff to my trail rig before the next outing, so I have no time for another project. Thanks though.

That crossed my mind also. I guess AW4 just came to mind and I figured it would be the cheapest/easiest option as the going rate for a good stock unit seems to be $150-250.

                      I was probably thinking AX-5

Alright. I'm also going to pass on this one, seems i won't have time to pick it up (Henderson, MN) anytime soon. I'd rather have a 4L xj or a V8 grand anyway. Talked to my friend last night. Wants it gone now $200 cash. Has a little piston slap at startup. Some newer front end parts/bushings. PM me for number.
