right manual winch setup for 20' trailer

If my quick online research is right a winch rated at 2500 lbs or so should safely be able to handle the load of a 5000 lb (by far the heaviest vehicle I can see going on my trailer) vehicle even up a 30% grade...

how much will it suck to crank with a 12:1 gear ratio?

The vehicle I will primarily be towing for now only weighs about 3300 for what that's worth, but I'd like to have some flexibility if needed.

I really don't want to afford a powered winch.

i have a 2500lb elec winch on mine and it works just fine.

id think doing a manual one might wear out your arm before it get up on the trailer

      me too-

I wish I had a frame of reference for how much the gearing will help

A car is a lot different than a boat (where my manual experience lies)

I need a winch also. But planning ahead for cars that may have flat tires or tranny problems. Or maybe just been sitting a while I am going to go with a bigger elec one. I was looking at some on Amazon for around $350

I could go that route as well- but kind of like the idea of a manual (if it will work well) due to the fact that it can't really break.

I do have an alternator lying around that puts out 155 amps at idle that would fit my Tahoe and a couple of spare deep cycles- definitely enough to power winch. Could go that route- but am far more in need of a good welder than a winch.

I don't use the trailer enough to want to mount a battery

I said that too, but once you have a trailer with an electric winch on it around, you'd be surprised how much you use it. Plus, car trailers are like welders and cherry pickers. As soon as your buddies know you have them, they become community property. lol.

I just need to figure out logistics of getting my Explorer gone, lol. I'll drop you a pm if I need actual help. I'd rather buy any tools etc. that I need than borrow though since I'll need them again etc.

I still think I may try to get away with a manual winch here with steep gears- some of the guys on the Explorerforum have some experience with doing it this way. Say it's slow, but can be done etc., I guess I'm young and would rather save the couple hundred bucks and hassle of it potentially breaking down--- and get to spend more on my car.

I picked up an electric winch at Northern Tool for $69. I've pulled my Mustang on the trailer several times now and as long as there is air in the tires, it does just fine. Plus, there is a manual wind if you choose.
