    351 Cleveland....????

I recently picked a 351 Cleveland and don't know much about these engines. As far as I can tell from the casting numbers its a '73 2V engine. The intake decodes '74.

So is this worth anything? rebuilding?
    I have a feeling it's a low compression pig.

I think this Cleveland would make my Model A badass..... 351C, T-5, 9''.

I'm sure the whole thing is junk. Cleveland's are not fans of keeping themselves oiled.

I agree that it would be a cool ass rod engine. See if you can find some 4v heads for it or get some aftermarket aluminum ones. These things were very popular race motors before the windsor head aftermarket took off. Prostock racers and the Circle track guys were doing some pretty extreme stuff to make those 4V heads work well @ 9000 rpm and 600+hp.

The head have off set vavles on like the windsor which have in line vavles.

There expensive to build because of the lack of aftermarket part available.

Can you provide an example? I find Summit Racing full of Cleveland parts.

Oh really? well it uses to be that way! (10+ years ago) I have no idea now.
My dad use to build these motors and race them. Infact I think he still has six to seven in the garage!

That would be a sweet engine for a rod. There are all kinds of parts out there. They weren't exactly know for longevity. But stick with the 2v heads they are way more streetable. If your going to race it consistantly then use 4v. The 4v heads are better in high rpm. But a set of 4.56 or bigger could solve that problem

351C engines are great motors to build HP. Would make a great motor in that A. The 2BBL heads are plenty for most street motors. The 4BBL ones are just monsters better suited to a consistant high RPM application. Prior to the aftermarket (thanks to the fox mustangs) producing some respectable heads for the Windsor family, you could not touch a Cleveland for power with a Windsor motor $$$ to $$$. There are minor mods that can be made to the oiling system that are recommended for heavy duty use, but short of a full blown circle track motor that lives at 7500 RPM it's whole life, the oiling is system is sufficient too. Parts availability is still good, but you will probably end up spending more compared to Windsor stuff (again, thanks to the fox). One downside to the C vs the W is that, as I recall, the C weighs a fair amount more, but I don't recall by how much (assuming iron heads on both). One upside is that you can have some bragging rights about having a Cleveland in your rod vs a more (yawn) common Windsor or worse yet, a (hell with yawn, full comatose) SBChebby. Far as I am concerned the only cooler Fomoco motor you realistically could run in that A would be full dresser Flattie. Alright, a 427 SOHC motor would be cooler, but I did say 'realistically'.

What mstngmikegt said, +1. I actually bought a 70 351C for my 34 because I thought it would be one of the coolest motors to have in it. On the downside though, they are pretty wide and I wanted to run a hood, so I ended up selling it and putting a Mustang 5.0 in it. If you're not running a hood, I say go for it, succeed where I failed.

I plan on running a hood, but just no hood sides. So I think I would be able to fit in it. If I do end up using this I would probably just put a small cam in it. A 4bbl carb, keep the 2V heads and bump up the compression. Any one know what these would be stock for compression?

These heads are different, the intake and exhaust are offset in the head and they are also "canted" in the head. It almost looks like a hemi design to me. I think it would make people look twiceat it, since it isn't the cookie cutter SBC.
