    Where to do compression test

I was wondering where the best place would be to go to do a compression or even a leak down test. I would go to the dealer, but im sure they will ass rape me. Is this a simple task for most shops? Like if say i went to a goodyear?

Also what is the difference btwn a compression/leak down test...I understand the basic but why is a leak down test generally better?

A compression test is basically what the title says, it tests the ability for the cylinder to hold compression. Hook up the tool (threads into the spark plug hole), hold throttle wide open and crank the engine over. I usually take all of the spark plugs out and unplug the fuel pump and ignition system to make sure there isn't a freak chance of the engine starting...

A leak down tester is different. You need to have the piston at top dead center so that both the intake and exhaust valves are closed. Then you hook up the tester to a compressor and set the regulator to around 100 psi I believe. You are going to be hooking the tool up to the cylinder the same way you did with the compression tester. Then basically you are seeing what the percent difference is with the air coming in and the air bleeding by. (The tool will have two gauges, an inlet psi and an outlet psi)

Hope that clears things up a bit.
