    Building a cage - Tube diameter & thickness ??

I just picked up a Air assisted Bender & a Hole saw jig for cutting tubing so i would like to start fabricating a cage as soon as possible.

Is there any particular type of tubing ( size , thickness , ect ) that I need to use in order for it to pass inspection if i wanted to go to a track ????

Any info is appreciated & Thanks for your time , BOB_T

        material

        assuming a 8.50 cage 1 5/8" .083 wall CM or 1 5/8" .118 wall MS
should work just fine. if your looking at going faster just call the sfi foundation and get their specs for it http://www.sfifoundation.com

not sure about the welding, we tig all our stuff so i dont know if they will let you wire feed anything anymore. I would call the local nhra tech guy and ask someone on here has his number, maybe they will chime in.

Wirefeed is ok, Tig is better, just cant have any double pass welds and you can't grind down any of the welds or fix them. Must be one continuos weld.
It is a damn poor mind indeed which can't think of at least two ways to spell any word.

they will need to certify it once it's doen anyways so better to call them first before you try and build it.

i just dug up my 25.5 book from sfi they say its okay to wire feed, if its okay for them then its okay for the track. from the sfi book

                  1. All structural material for the roll cage (tubing flat bar, etc)must be normalized 4130chrome-molybdenum steel (4130n) purchased to requirements of military specificationMIL-T-6763b and its subsidary documents or equivalent, or mild (carbon and alloy;seamed or seamless round;as welded hot rolled, round;mandrel drawn, round cold worked, round) steel tubing purchased to the requirements of ASTMA519 or A513.

steel: round tube larger than 1 1/2" nominal wall thickness .118
1 1/2 or smaller nominal wall is .108
