    05' Yota Matrix dies randomly

So my co-worker came to me this morning and told me his little Toyota matrix died on him twice while driving to work. The conditions he described sounded very unfamiliar (in dry conditions) to me for trouble shooting.
He stated that his cars engine shut off on its own while driving on the freeway for no apparent reason, then after sitting for a few minutes started right back up. A few miles down the road it did the same thing again. He states that it had electrical power each time it lost engine power.
My first thoughts were a bad coil pack but I think it has individual coils. He also says nothing seemed overly hot, no burning smells or anything like that.

Anyone ever see anything like this on one of these or a similar year Corolla or Pontiac Vibe?

No offense, but he sounds like he's lying about something (not intentionally, I bet he just doesn't know). In any case, to do any sort of additional diagnostic will require a good deal more information.

Hell, if it's only at highway speed it could be a misreading VSS and the computer is cutting out because it thinks it's going too fast. Not that I think that is likely.

Ive replaced allot of ECM's in the Vibes. Other than that i would guess cam/crank sensor or the wiring of the sensors.

I hate to agree with him, but I think he's right on this one. I know when the cam sensor starts acting up in my truck the thing will just shut off like you turned the key off.

If this was a Jeep, I would say it's almost certainly a crank position sensor. I'm assuming this car probably has something similar? So I bet it's that.

also fuel pumps are notorious on these cars too.
