    Flexplate riddle?

I just removed my recently installed tranny after hearing a "load" raddle and found a torn flexplate. Almost completely torn around the six bolts that hold it on to the rear of the motor. Funny enough it still ran/moved.

My set-up is a decent 351W on a stock AOD that will soon have a beefed up tranny and single turbo...

Is this normal or is it a freack accident? Does my Motor have too much power and should I have considered a stronger flex plate and is there such an item...?

    Please help the newbe....

Forgive me if am missing the obvious.....

I had a stock 460 do the same thing.

When we got to my place, I already had a candle burning. It was by "Glade", which I think you pronounce like the singer Sade, because it is an exotic candle that smells just like real pine.

seen this quite a few times on diff motors.
usually caused by improper torquing of the flexplate.
can also be caused by improper crank walk(end play) ora converter ballooning.

        Pic of my flexplate

This picture is the same as my frecken flexplate! I'm installing a stock plate today. I plan to re-check the torque and end play as well. I hope it's not end play on the crank....that would suck hard!

When I install my street fighter AOD, then I'll go with an upgraded flexplate.

Still don't know for sure why my flexplate failed.

Maybe when I installed the trannny/motor we forgot to tighen the conv bolts and it "clanked" pretty load. Maybe this weaken the flexplate with the wobble of the conv?????

        Thanks for the thoughts....

you can find sfi flexplates on ebay. Found one for 39.95 + 12.00 shipping. its out of Iowa just make sure you get the right weight 28 or 50 oz. You might have under torqued cause of the cracks moving outward

Was it old? over time flexplates weaken at that point where they bolt to crankshaft.

The stocker had been stressed due to poor initial installation by another party. It had been loose once before and re-torqued. I think we've determined the cause.

                    Flexplate is being completed

I spent 8hrs today working on my li'l stang. Removed the tranny, raised the motor and inspeacted the torque conv/flexplate.

Found these items and beginning to repair: Oil pan leaking, antifreeze reseviour leaking, Power steering rack leaking and of course the flexplate is broke.

Final verdict: Do your own work boys because nobody works on your stuff like you do..

                    1. Removing oil pan to tap for future turbo drain and replacing oil pan gasket
                    2. Replacing power steering rack
                    3. replacing anti-freeze reseviour
                    4. Installing flexplate
                    5. Replacing Rear main seal

The shame is the car runs great but I am having to tidy-up all of the stuff so that it doesn't "haunt" me later. I hate a leaky motor/car!

Guess what I am doing all day tomorrow?
