I have mine hooked up to my MSD. But if you dont have that option, I believe that it is just one or too wires to hookup. I think that it should be very easy.
If it is an autometer tach you will have a power, keyed power, ground and a signal wire. If you are running the stock ignition then the signal wire runs to the negative side of the coil. The rest are pretty self explanatory.
Also is a tach a good investment for a street/strip car?

If you want to zap your buddy, dont ground the tach and tell him to turn it over while you look under the hood.
Im in Blaine letting some girl get 14" inches, i think she knows you....

It's four wires total for almost all tach's. 12v switched, ground, illumination 12v, and - tach signal. All the necessary wires are attached to the cluster if you are not running an after market ignition. Most after market boxes require you use the tach output on the box (MSD or equivalent). I've got mine mounted in the tray and it provides very good visibility.
ok, so i hook the signal wire to the negative coil, the ground i ground anywhere, the power goes to a power wire, and the keyed power goes where?

Power goes to a switched power source which turns on the tach. The other 12v lead is to light the gauge at night when the dash lights up. You could grab the switched power, illumination, and ground wires from the radio harness. Heres the color codes.
