    Driving with slicks?

I have 26x8.5 MT Drags mounted on 15" v6 rims (tubeless). When I'm racing down the track I cant keep my car straight. It pulls left, right, left, etc. It's a little bit scary. People have told me its because I have radials in the front and the problem will go away if I get skinnies. Is this true?
Also, when I'm at the track I have the slicks at about 14psi. If I jump the pressure to about 22 do you think the car will be driveable on the street?

I'm just sick of these awd cars owning me on the street. My goal is to pull 1.7's on the street and take their little 4cyl awd asses to school

    Thanks
    Andy

It's normal, especially with the little 8.5" wide ones.

I would recommend not driving on them on the street, because of legality issues, rain potential, etc.

If you want something for the street, I would sell them and get some ET Streets or Drag Radials or other DOT stickies.

I run McCreary (Now 'American Racer') G60-15 (equivalent to a 245/60-15) wrinklewall dirt-compound DOT tires on my GN and they hook very nice, even at 32-psi street pressure. Plus, they are only $190/pair shipped, and they seem to last quite awhile. At the track, heated up at 14psi pressure, they should be great!

        Just an idea...

I"ve run as little as 5 pounds in my 31"s, (at the track ONLY), and THEN it handled kinda funky at the big end. But normally run 9 pounds, (little less at slippery rock), and have no handling issues to speak of.

Well, this is just one of those "maybe overlooking the obvious questions" ... what's the condition of your Trak-Lok unit? If both wheels are enguaged properly then you should see some sway but nothing violent (like on my 7.5" one-wheeler that will get squirly fast).

Hmm good point. I've been thinking my trac loc may need a rebuild.
I posted this on the corral..
"If i drop the clutch I do a big burn out with both tires spinning. If I turn the wheel to the left and give it gas I do donuts. If I turn the wheel to the right and give it gas, I go nowhere and only my right tire spins. Every once in a while when I'm at the starting line warming up my slicks, only my right tire will spin, even though most of the time both spin.

Is it time for a trac loc rebuild?
                "

What do you guys think? If yes, could it be causing my violent swaying at the track?

                Thanks

Yeah, sounds like your trak-lok unit may not be up to snuff right now. That happens with the clutch-type torque-biasing units... they wear out ... especially when a large amount of torque is applied to them. (Aka a warmed over V8 with sticky tyres would cause some "out of specification" stress.)

do you have any loose suspension components? worn bushings etc that might have excessive play under full acceleration?
                    possible doglegging?
are you jerking the wheel when you're bangin gears?
just a few to think about.
