How much time do I have left? (Transmission Question Stock T5)

in my transmission. Raced SVT5Liter yesterday from a dig three times. The first time, I shifted, I pushed the clutch all the way in and I still ground third gear, so much so it would not go in until I tried it again.

The second time, I ground second gear, again clutch pushed all the way in.

Third time, third gear ground but went in gear unlike the first time.

    History....

My transmission sometimes pops out of second gear, and has since I have owned it.

My transmission makes a loud ass humm at 70mph+ in 5th gear.

So, if I drive like a normal person, I can shift fine, no grinding at all. Seems like all is ok. If I get on it, it's grind-a-thon action in my Mustang.

I was going to bolt this up when I drop the 351 in, but it looks like this thing is in worse shape than I thought. I don't want this piece of shit to strand me anywhere, and want to see what kind of time frame I may get out of it based on the experience of others.

What do you have for clutch cable stuff (cable, quadrant, adjuster)?

uh, don't know, don't know. Have not touched that stuff or looked at it since I bought it....in 1998. IT never gave me any issues and was always fine, so I figured, meh, fuck it. But this past year of auto-x really screwed things up.

        i think you're ok.
popping out of gear is probably a worn slider, won't strand you, probably just continue to slowly get worse. otherwise the shifting complaints, probably just needs a simple rebuild kit with new synchros.
i wouldn't worry about it, maybe have a guy on the board rebuild it over winter if you're real worried or just want it fixed.

I would be willing to bet that you shifting problems are due to the clutch not disengaging completely. If it is the factory adjuster, they are 2 plastic quadrants that strip out and blow nuts. When they strip out, they do not adjust properly and the clutch will not release completely which can cause the gear grinding. I have a Fiore quadrant and FWA with the OEM cable and it works great. I also added a spring between the clutch fork and bell housing to take up and free play. It makes sure that the TOB is disengaged from the pressure plate. It also adds a firmer feel to the clutch pedal.

I'd agree with the above too.... mine was doing the grinding thing and sometimes wouldn't going into gear the first time. Replace the factory cable and quadrant with a good aftermarket setup. I put in a Maximum Motorsports setup and have been very happy with it. Good luck!

Cool. Will have to be mid october though. Car is back in storage and I don't want to drive it until the next cruise. Going through 45.00 bucks in gas in 2 days sucks, and so does the feel every bump in the road suspension.

whens the last time the fluid was changed? If your tranny sounds like a supercharger like mine did then you got about 2 good pulls left or like 2 months of light driving

5th gear always seems to be noisey in t5's but if you put gear lube in it instead of atf it usually quiets it down a bit but....your not suppose to run gear lube in a t5 but i have in the past. it wont last long if you keep shifting it hard but if you take it easy on the shifts then it probably wont go out.

                            Worst advice ever.

Never use gear lube in a T-5.
