Do mustang 302's have a front oil slinger that goes between the timing gear and the balancer? My chilton manual shows one but ford doesn't even have the part so I'm not sure if I need it or not.

some of them do and some dont, depends on which front seal you have. Just dont get them mixed up and run a slinger with a seal that does not have room for one, the seal will rub on the slinger causing metal shavings to fall into the oil, the seal will put grooves in the slinger. I almost fucked that up once.
Edit: atleast thats the way my 351 is, 302s have the same timing cover iirc.

one seal has a flange on the outside, the other does not.Originally posted by OrangeCrush 86 View PostHow do I tell which seal I have?
Mine does not have a slinger on it, i would have to go out and glance but i think i have the seal without the flange. Cause the one with the flange will rub on the slinger if i remember right. I could make a call and find out for sure.

What happened on my 302 build is between the double roller timing chain and the harmonic balancer there was no room for a slinger. Possibly the seal would have rubbed too, but you should assemble just the balancer and chain with the slinger to double check for interference there as well.
Also, my engine was a '89 or '90 and I swear there was no slinger from the factory. It's possible I forgot about it and/or somehow lost it, but I don't think so. I had a spare slinger lying around from another engine and I tried to assemble that in there.
I hope this is helpful for you.1970 Mustang convertible 302/C4
