    Clutch Questions

Got my car back from the shop today after leaving it there for 3 days while they tried to figure out why it was running strange. They said they couldn't find nothing wrong with it other than that I would need to replace the clutch in the next few months. I'm wondering what are the bennefits for getting an aftermarket clutch rather than a factory replacement, the cost differece, and good brands to look at.

an aftermarket clutch grabs better and doesn't slip if you have the power level to slip a good condition stock one. an aftermarket one usually has a disk with more area to grab.

The clutch should be choosen accordingly to the engine output and driving type.

On a stock street car that won't slip the factory clutch and is a driver I'd run a stockish clutch for less pedal effort and it'll be nice to the stock flywheel.

No point in putting an iron stage 27 clutch in a stock car. It'll just tire your leg and kill the flywheel.

haha, a worn out clutch wouldn't make it run strange. and how do they know you'll need one soon anyway? oh yeah because they beat the shit out of it doing stupid stuff

Well that would explain the empty tank of gas and bald tires.

And if the clutch was slightly dissengaging wouldn't that feel like a motor that is chugging or missing?

oh when I said work the bugs out, I meant I'd drop the clutch repeatedly at 6000RPMs.

seriously though. The clutch eithe slips or it doesn't. If it doesn't chatter, make noise, or slip it's fine. An experienced motor head should be able to drive it and tell ya if it's good.

Cool. All I know is that it just hasn't felt right for a couple of weeks. They said their is nothing wrong with the engine, so I don't want to go fishing for something that isn't their. Perhaps it's the miles, but 76,000 doesn't seem super high.

What do you mean the car "runs strange"? 76,000 miles isn't bad at all, and definitly is not enough to be responsible for driveability issues.

Looking for any information on clutch's is going to be strictly opinions. You will most likely find people who love and people who hate each brand you look at. The major brands out there (in no particular order) are: Centerforce, Spec, Fidanza, Ram, and Ford Racing.

Ultimately it will come down to your goals for the car and how much power you will need the clutch to hold. As a general rule, the more power a clutch will hold, the worse the driveability gets. Personally. I have had good luck with Spec in the past... if you might add some sort of power adder then consider a spec 2+, if you are running the stock input shaft, probably stay away from the spec 3.

If you want the car to remain liquidable without the prospective buyer knowing it was ever modified or beat on, you want to stay with one that has near stock driveability.

                              Stay away from Spec....

                              Ford Racing FTW.

10% over cost from tousley ford...
