The 289 is more than likely a 28oz. 1982-93 5.0s are externally balanced meaning they require a 50 oz flywheel and balance. All 351w and pre 82 5.0s are internally balance and require a 28oz flywheel / balancer

You will need to take out the in tank pump and put a pickup from like a 85 stang in there.

You'll want to replace your fuel line and tank pickup. The stock lines aren't sufficient for anything other than a mild street motor. 1/2" Aluminum line is cheap and won't be a restriction. An aftermarket pickup will work fine with self priming electric or mechanical pumps.

Take out stock sending unit, take out pump, drill hole and run an aluminum line that will sit at bottom of tank sump. Epoxy the shit out of the top where the line runs through the sender, and bam...you got a pickup for a mechanical pump setup.

Roller cam motors require a steel gear on the distributor. Flat tappet cams use an iron gear. You could convert your cam and use a cast gear distributor (83) or use a steel gear distributor on the stock cam.
Get yourself a HEI distributor for the roller ford motors for simplicity and cost. They go for about $120 on ebay.
The early pickups are pretty restrictive. If you have access to a welder you can fabricate your own, or there are a few companies that make a drop in. I've heard of fitment issues with the aftermarket versions. I decided to go with a fuel cell for the weight savings and the fact that a cell uses a sumped outlet.

I've got a flywheel if you need one. 50oz imbalance for h.o. motors.

i'll probably go with a stock ho distributor then, i was just trying to see if what i had works.

as for a pickup, how might i fabricate one?? i have no problem with fab work, i just need to know what i'm trying to build. basically just a pipe that goes to the bottom of the tank to suck fuel up?? cut the old tube and weld the new one w/o the pump on??

as for the flywheel, how much do you want?

You can just have my old flywheel if you need it. It should probably be turned.

You would just be replacing the pump assembly with a large (1/2" if possible) tube the same length If you use a deadhead pump/regulator or a mechanical pump, you won't need a return line, but if you want to have it for future use, it should be the same size. Steel line can be had pretty cheap at any parts store.

I wish I had pics of the pickup in LTDpower's LTD to help you understand how it was made. Much easier when you see a pic of it.
