        Steve,
If your going to go with the off name cheaper (pricewise, I am not making a judgement beyond that) make sure you check out what the trailer has for axles. Are they a common axle that parts are readily available for so if you have to fix it 500 miles away from home, you aren't dealing with something weird.

I sell trailers, axles/brakes are one area companies can save alot of $$ when it comes to keeping the price low. For the traveling your going to do, a $2000 trailer is not a quality trailer from my experience.

Do you have experience with H&H trailers? I really know nothing about trailers and want a quality 18 ft tandem axle trailer. I was planning on looking at H&H trailers because they seem to be sold nation wide and offer what I want. They have 18ft (overall length) trailers with a 2 ft BT for around $2200.

When you say off brand, you lose me. I don't know what a brand name would be, except featherlite.

Can you pm me a list of what you have available? I would like to give a friend business (if I can afford it) before anyone else.

I have seen them(the H&H) around, but have never looked at them very closely. BTW, I am not a big Featherlight fan either. lol

Often the "cheap" trailers I see are trailers sitting on lots that are built by a local welding shop or a fabrication company. Just to give you an idea, the cheapest trailer that I sell is in the $2500-2700 range and I consider them marginal at best. They are fine for relatively local trips, but the long hauls we are usually doing is different.

It gets pretty expensive to fix a tire, axle, or brakes when you are on the road. One question I would ask a place before buying a trailer is: do they have the bearings, brakes, and tires on hand at that specific time for the trailer you are looking at. If they don't and try to tell you "they can get them fast: or "you can get them anywhere" they are probly not real serious about the trailer business and you might want to do more research before buying.

Sounds like others in here have experience with "other" trailers. If they have had good luck and are using them the same way as you will be, that is probly as good of a guarantee as your going to get.

Have you done some searching on CC's or track sires like that? Like I mentioned in a earlier post, you will pat yourself on the back if you buy a trailer that has a low profile fender, or if it has a quick release fender that can easily be removed in order to open the door on the car once it is loaded. Remember to compensate for the possibly lower ride height that you might run on a track only type car.

None of the trailers I have will clear a drivers door, there are better trailers for your type of use. I appreciate the thought though.

Here's what I *think* (based on my reading so far) I need.

1)16 or 18 ft tandem axle, prefer 16 if I can get away with it for cost/weight savings.

2)Electric Brakes. On one or both axles? I thought I read that MN requires brakes on all wheels.

              3) Some type of pulling machine. I am leaning towards a mid/late nineties F150 with a 5.8 and a manual transmission. These are within my budget and can be had with less than 100,000 miles on them. I have looked at F250 diesels, but don't want to replace a tired (200,000 mile) E4OD.

              4) trailer brake controller, class 3 or 4 hitch.

              5) Things like tool boxes, leveling hitches, lights and winches can wait until I figure out the basics.

              Am I missing anything?
Does this look like a good start?
              Is 16 feet enough bed?

              Thanks
Late 90's 2wd LD250 with an I6 would do you great if you purchased and an Aluma(aluminum) trailer.

I took a look at CC.com and I saw a few used trailer ads and all other threads were about tying a car down (very informative) and adding accessories to your traile (ie tire racks and tool storage).

I will have to look harder when I am at home, my lunch isn't long enough to look.

What trailer spares do you carry?

                Wheels/tires, lugnuts, straps? Hubs?

ratcheting wheel straps... or T-hooks on chains with binders.

Other than a spare tire, I don't carry anything. I take everything apart once or twice a year and go thru it all. Never had so much as a flat tire. (I replace the tires every three years)...................... I guess I should practice what I preach, huh? lol

I have to kick in my 2c worth. I had open trailers and bought my first enclosed back in 1996. I would never go back to an open trailer again. The ease and safety of an enclosed far outweighs the fuel savings. It is nice to have interior lights, a winch and extra room for stuff you need at the track. You also don't get as dirty when you strap down a car in an enclosed. If it is raining it is really nice to be able to pull your car in and work on it. It also doubles as storage for your car and extra parts in the winter. A 20ft enclosed used or new is between 4000-15,000 depending how fancy you want to get. The aluminum trailers (featherlite) are awesome but they are more money. What is the price on the featherlite 20 without the truck???

                          Thanks, Bart.

I have to start somewhere and don't have $4000 in my budget right now. I have to buy a truck yet. I may fix that this weekend.

No, you have to have a trailer so you can tow me home when I break down.
