c4 Auto tranny leakage

My c4 has leaked since day one the car has been running, it leaves a spot on the garage floor after i drive it, and i had a new bushing and seal put in the front pump, and it still leaks, i think it leaks elsewhere too, its worse after i beat it at the track, then when i drive it on the street, its less, and the whole underside of the car is coated with tranny fluid, (light coating) and if i ever put full exhaust on it, i would like to get this problem fix.t so the mess ceases. Where is a good tranny shop that could diagnos the leakage and solve the problem, thanks.

I had a leak in one of my C4's and it turned out it had a hairline crack at the forward threaded fitting for the tranny cooler line. Took a wise man with the "Total Bitch" mirror to find it though. He knows what Im talking about.

How good of a cooler are you running? If that fluid gets real hot it will leak past that front seal no matter what.

True, or out the vent on top. How much fluid is in there?

Ya, if it wasnt for that BITCH MIRROR I never would have found the leak. You'd better hang on to that. Even if we dont use it on your car the future Mrs. Southernlx might need it.

Its decent i think, it one i ordered out of summit. After driving it i have put my fingers on the cooler and it didnt feel hot at all, just warm. I have it mounted against the radiator.

You mean in the tail housing right? That one is stock.

C4s are notorious for leaking fluid/fumes/kinda fluid out of the vents in the rear/top area of the tailhousing.
Also, little cracks in the filler tube (case fill) style. Seen plenty of those cause headaches.
Overtightening of pan gaskets, old brittle tailstock gaskets, cracked front pump gaskets, and worn linkage 0 rings and seals,. that's about all there is to leak.
I made a fix for my spewing breather. I tapped the breather, put a fitting on it, and ran braided #4an braided line up to a custom made aluminum box that I mounted inside where the windshield wiper motor would be (under the cowl). (be glad to share specs/dimensions/thoughts on it).

In either case, after doing so, I have absolutely NO leaks under the trans anymore. (used to always have some drippage/accumulation under it after a weekend of racing).

It definately leaks alot worse after a day at the track, you can see the drips on the trailer after i load it on. I never thought of any O rings on the linkage, hmm, that makes me wonder if they got replaced when i had it rebuilt.

It also leaks a spot on the floor out of the bell housing, i noticed when i install the converter, you can rock it, is that normal? Shouldnt it be tighter than that? I had a brand new bushing and seal installed in the front pump in 2004, so thats not very old, it leaked right away anyways. Another issue im wondering about is do i have enough of the slip yoke in the tail housing, its more than half, i know that much, i could take a pic of it and post it i suppose.

I bought one of those red summit catch cans with the breather filter on top, but the thing is so big and fugly that i dont have alot of room to mount it under the hood. And the breather on the tail housing is stock.

Oh and my filler tube is a pan fill btw.

I suppose as far as the temp issue goes, i actually dont know how hot it gets, i should just buy a trans temp gauge.

Yes i would be interested in the dimentions of that catch tank you have on your car.

On my PA c4 I put a jw bellhousing on it and it leaked also. They said to look at the bell housing at the bottom. Sure enough the bellhousing was hitting the case before the front pump. So it torqued down but not all the pressure was on the pump so the front pump leaked out at the bottom. I pulled the housing and ground down the case so the bell housing wouldn't hit and it solved the problem.

Assuming whomever installed the seal correctly, (there are tricks to everything, ya know), anyway, assuming it was installed correctly, the new bushing and seal shouldn't leak, no matter.
Another thing to think about is IF the breather in the tailstock is plugged. That will overpressurize the trans and force oil out of the easiest place there is. (whichever seal/gasket seals less at that particular time/heat cycle).
Usually the seals /0 ring on the shift lever side only leak after the vehicle has sat for a while, and THEN usually when the transmission has been overfilled. (doesn't take much at all).
If you have access to anyone with a blacklite/oil leak spotter setup it's quite easy to diag leaks. You add special transmission dye to trans, let it run, (or do whatever you have to do to make it leak). If that means running it thru the gears and putting a load/stress on things, that's what you gotta do), anyway, then put her in the air, lay underneath it, and the dye will show up bright orange/yellow (depends on the maker of the dye).

Oil leaks (anywhere), are a true pain in the ass. I know I hate them.
