they make just plain pickups with no pump in them at all, specific for 86-93 tanks. they're just a fuel pickup/return and then you run whatever inline pump you want, i think they're designed for high hp cars that don't want the in-tank pump. but i'd think that would work.
ya, i've seen those on ebay, and i'll probably end up going that route. i was just wondering if i could simply drop in a pickup from a carb'd car, but i guess not w/o changing tanks.
The stock carbed tank lines are smaller than optimal, even though I believe it would work. For a mechanical pump, you want no restrictions to flow. If you could get a pickup with a 1/2" feed, I'd go for it. 3/8" would be the minimum I'd recommend. My old 68 ford has a 5/16" feed line, and with my high volume mechanical pump it still will drop pressure under load.....less than ideal. Thats with running 3/8" steel line from back to front.
granetelli makes that fuel tank insert for like $100, you could sump your existing tank, or i have a tank from my old 85 i am not going to need anymore but its kicked in a little on the bottom but works fine...

You can also modify the stock sending unit to use with carb.
you wouldn't have a how to link or something, would ya?? or maybe a pic? i'd just like to see the end product, because thats probably what i'll end up doing.

Take it out, drill hole, stick fuel line in, epoxy. Done.
I'd take a pic of LTD's setup but I really don't want to go to his house and pull his tank again.
I did a little searching but couldn't find what I was looking for. Being that the pickup is on the top of the tank, whatever you do should be fine as long as there is a decent seal. The steel plate the tube runs through is pretty weak, so be careful with it. The tight bend right off the top is the toughest part of the job. Make sure your tubing matches the length of the stock pickup.
btw Akro, that is the most distracting and disturbing sig I've ever seen other than the exploding cat.
