    Help Needed Really Badly on Non-Mustang

    My fiance' and I spent 6 wonderful hours last night putting a water pump in our 98 kia sportage. It was our first time disassembling a kia much less a DOHC motor. so after we actually got it all back together there was a new whinning noise coming from the motor that i dont have a clue where the hell its coming from. also when i opened the radiator cap to add more fluid i was getting white smoke starting to come out of the radiator. i would love to throw my mustang back on the insurance but with work i am driving over a 100 miles a day and on 93 octane that just isnt going to happen so i have to get this car working. is anyone available to come down to shakopee and give a listen and point me in the right direction? pretty please ?!

      Well the whirring sound could be a ton of things. I'd imagine that the waterpump is driven off the timing belt. If so, did you replace the belt AND tensioner as well? Most parts stores carry a timing belt kit that have all the nessicary parts (Belt, tensioner, a idler pully or two). As for the white smoke out the cap, I can only suspect one thing, and you aren't going to like what it is. Try filling up the radiator when it's cold. , watch for bubbles, if you get that, chances are you either have a cracked head and/or head gasket issue.

        thanks for replying! no i didnt change the tensionor or belt, you think the belt may be too tight? when i was putting the belt back on i had a pry bar on the tensioner ... i'll check the oil in a little bit here and see if i have water mixing or not, if head gasket or head are screwed then the kia is getting chucked....and teh mustang will back in action...

          checked oil and isnt milky, added water and no bubbles, started her up and now it isnt getting that thin bead of smoke coming out of radiator so i dont know if it is something when it warms up or not.... still wondering if that belt is too tight.... what is the reasoning behind switching out the timing belt just preventive maintenance or once they arent stretched they're ruined?

            Have you tried to locate the sound by using a pipe to the ear or a long wrench? You never know.. The replacement water pump might be bad.........Hey Army of darkness is on scifi...woot
