    89 Mustang 5.0 and 89 TB engine

    Hello fellas..
quick questions, is the engine on an 89 thunderbird with a 302 similar to the engine on an 89-93 5.0 stang?
what i am trying to find out, is if the mass air, wire harness and computer from the 89 thunderbird are similar to an 89-93 5.0 mustang...

    thanks

I believe they are, but I'm not sure if they have the 5.0 High Output V8's in them and Cougers. I assume if it does have mass air, then the harness probally is the same as are the '89-93 fox's.

It could be the "lower output" 5.0 that has a few different quirks with it.

If you've already got a 5.0, then it's just a matter of swapping on whatever you need from one ot the other.

What's wrong with the one in the car?

i was waiting for you to chime in.... basically he was offered a cheap "parts car" and he was looking at it as a spare motor, tranny, rear-end etc. plus since he has an 88 sd he was looking to switch to mass air... he hasnt actually seen the car yet though.. what other stuff other can he possibly nab? if its a 302 i figured it was most likely an 8.8 but i didnt know if they were rear disc or not. he said the main problem with the car was that it needed a new master cyl. but the guy said for that car with its ABS would cost like $600 (i think the guy is full of shit but im not there to see it ) if it happens to be a super coupe he should be able to scavenge the turbo for his gt shouldnt he?

btw..the kia's water pump was teh problem but since i am hearing a knock from time to time i think the motor is gonna go soon...thanks for the help duckie!

Damn... poor fuckin' Kia. Yours sounds like a damn quality vehicle.

If I remember correctly the '86 *SHOULD* have the 8.8, I know '86 can be a year where (especially on the "big" foxes) Ford decided to tell the line-workers to, "Put on a part that fits."

The new ABS master cylinders for those is EXPENSIVE when it's NEW! A lot of people sell them used all the time. Troll some Mark VII forms or even call a couple of junkyards and you'll find one. They're hella common. I had to fix one when I had my '88 TurboCoupe.

I'm gonna get some lunch, and finish up my thoughts when I get back.

            Peace,

The car won't have a turbo unless it's a TurboCoupe. And then you don't want any of the parts off of it. It will be a 7.5", neither the auto or the stick will bolt to the 5.0 and the fuel injection isn't going to run a 5.0.

SuperCoupes weren't made 'til 89 and they are all Supercharged-3.8's. The blower would work on a 5.0 with a custom intake... but I'd probably hock it on ebay for $150 and eat well for a month.

If it is a 5.0 it will be the AOD and probably a variant of the 5.0HO. The headers will be a little different (or at least I suspect) and the wiring harness (I just know this from experience with Mark VII's, T-birds may be different) will probably be a cluster-fuck more complicated than a Fox one. But if you just are looking to do a MAF swap, it can be made possible with the MAF and computer. (I just did that last weekend infact... so if you're interested do a search on here and feel free to PM me with other questions.)

Okay, I'm making another post. For some reason I kept thinking, "1986" and not "1989" ...

The '89 is an MN-12 car, not a "big Fox." So you're going to be dealing with a totally different AOD and the rear-end will be IRS and won't fit well into a Mustang.

The good news: I think the computer is an A9L. But you're paying $600 for a spare short-block, computer, and MAF at that point.

But in terms of fixing the ABS problem: I'd just get one from a base-model car in the junkyard. I see MN-12 cougar's and T-birds all the time now... just gnab a standard M/C and pipe it in.

sorry i have not posted any more info on this, as i have been busy at work.. it has been a screwed up day for us.

any ways, my friend Roddie talked to the guy who is selling the car, apparently it is a 92 or 93 thrunderbird with a 302 HO and it needs the master cylinder for the brakes and is selling it for $150, i do not know what condition the car is... the guy is going to give me a call tonight for me to check out the car... i can then give more info and post some photos..

i read all the postings from duckylittle and all the info is very interesting...
so in other words, the car might be automatic and if the computer and MAF can work on the mustang, i might have a problem, since my car is a 5 speed.

i am mostly interested in the car because of the computer and the MAF setup, the rest of the parts are a bonus... i figure i can always sell the rest and make my $150 back...

what can you tell me about the 92 or 93 tbirds with a 302 HO???

Automatic computers work just fine on 5-speed cars. Infact, an old trick used to be to put the Autocomptuers on the sticks because the autos had a little more advance in the timing curve.
