    optima batterys are junk.

i bought an optima from my work and it would not hold a charge at all. i had it on the charger on 12 amps for 3 days straight and it was still drawing 5 amps. i dont understand. everyone i know who has the battery loves it.

i had the red top. i know, poeple love them, maybe i just had a bad one. either way, i will not buy another one. i just bought a good interstate with 1000 cranking amps and a 85 month warrenty. it was cheaper and the warrenty was almost as long as the optima's

I swear by Optima batteries. But furthermore, I find it safer to have a battery without acid sloshing all over when taking corners on the course and such. Having a problem with an Optima must be a rare event indeed, sorry to hear you did not have good luck with one. You should have tried another one though, there will always be defects in any sort of manufacturing process.

I have a dead red-top in the garage as well.

                  Didn't last a single winter.

My red top outcranks any other battery that fits in my tray. It will hold a charge all winter long, even hooked up. It is 6 years old.

Optimas are very sensitive to their charge rate. Where I work, I always get free Optimas in on core exchange (we sell alot to a construction company, and they replace all batteries every 3 years regardless). I always charge them at a 2amp rate for a couple days, and they always come to life. If you fast charge them, they will burn up. Part of the warranty determination is to weigh the batteries. If they have been cooked (fast charged), they will weigh less than a good one.

I currently have a yellow top that is my second Optima going on 6 years, never had a problem. If I remember correctly I had a 900cca redtop for 3 years before my 210 amp alternator that was failing took it out and I got my yellow top.

At this point I will never buy anything but Optimas!

Not to insult your intelligence, both of the guys having problems with the optima's, but are you sure the battery is the culprit? I'd say 50% of the batteries that people bring in and say are shot, there's nothing wrong with. They usually find something else is the problem. A lot of the time it's just a bad connection or a battery cable. I'm not saying this is the case but I'd have the batteries tested with a really good tester. Ours is $1,000 and it tests the conductance of the plates in the battery.

Of everyone I know who has had a bad Optima (not many bad ones of all the ones out there) they have always been the result of improper care.

I had a bad red top, and I know it was the battery, because I had it tested 2 times, put in a new battery, havent had a problem since...red tops suck....yellow might be ok though. seems more people have problems with the red tops than the yellows.
