    Carbs For Ford 302

Now that I actually got my Jeep rewired, I need to move on to all the motor issues. So now I'm looking at getting a new carb and could use some suggetions. The motor in the truck is a ford 302 out of an 80's Mustang. One Idea I had was to get a Holley Carb and in the future get a edelbrock intake/cam....opinions on that setup are welcome too.

I had thought that you had a 351 in that. But anyways, if the 302 is mild and you are going to run a 4 barrel holley, i would go with like a 600 cfm.

Yeah so did I, the guy I bought it from told me wrong. Anyways yeah I was looking at like a 600 cfm not really looking to turn the truck into a drag vehicle. I'm looking at the Holley cause its what I got on there now and I know the new ones come with the ford kickdown. If the edelbrock 600 comes with the same stuff for the ford tranny I would get one of them instead, since I am considering a edelbrock intake and cam

I have a 525 Road Demon JR on my tow rig and love it. Just remember it's easy to over carb and the throttle response and low end torque of a smaller carb is great.

        Displacement x RPM / 3456 = CFM assuming 100% VE,which is not likely on a street engine.

So a 302 at 5500 can only use 480 CFM...

That 525 would prolly be a better idea, the 600 was the first thing i thought of. Very good point.

I've had good luck with it so far. I think I paid about $280-290 with the kickdown linkage and electric choke off Ebay from a guy that is down in lakeville.
              his ebay ID is ernmar1
You could try emailing him direct and get a price. It's called R&D Racing

or 952-469-3219 I don't have deal with him or anything, but I have picked up 2 carbs from him over the last few years. He sent a stack of cards out with both carbs, and I have with my other parts info.
This was a couple years ago. So prices might have changed. He ships fast too, or you could pick it up.

BTW. I get about 15 MPG with my 81 F-250 with a 351M using that carb. and about 12.5 pulling the trailer.

Yeah one of my concerns has been not to over carb the motor, but at the same time I wanna make sure later I don't need a bigger one because of future mods like my intake, cam, heads and exhaust

The carb I have on the truck right now looks like the 600 cfm series one, not sure though having a hard time making out the numbers on the car to firgure out what size it is.

A 650 with a low HG power valve will work just fine. The 5. power valve will slow down the incoming fuel from the secondaries and allow you to pick up RPM's befor opening all the way. This will allow you part throttle driveability of a 600 with the attributes of a 650 above about 4500 RPM's. If anybody doubts this they can go find a Holley handbook and look it up. It's basically how they dealt with the problem in 83's with the weak cam and the 600 carb. I have done it and it works well. My carb is an electric choke 4600 series. I believe the power valve for it will cost like $17 and the bowl gaskets are about the same. My intake WAS going on a show motor and the top was bead blasted and coated aluminum color. It actually looks better than out of the box new.
