    differential question

Hey, Still looking at prices for 3.73 gears for my 02 V6. Anwyay, I was wondering what the best differential setup would be for my stock rear end and 3.73 gears. According to all the research I've done, If I just want my car to have more balls when I drive and something I can take to the track every now and then, I should go with a limitied slip. Any comments or advice as to what would be the best?

I changed only the gears and it made a BIG difference (from 2.73's to 3.73's), and I would imagine that the same would be true for your car. I don't think you would really need the limited slip, but you certainly could add it if you wanted at the same time to save $ on install. Hope this helps

a used 7.5" limited slip would probably be good and cheap. but i seriously wouldn't bother doing anything to a v6, save your money for a better car.

Why not? There's more than a few V6 powered cars (one's a vert too) that will walk all over most of the cars on this board.

because it would be pointless and a waste of money and time.

Well that is wonderful that there are some quick V6s. Hell, nowadays, my slow 5.0 can hardly keep up with a stock v6. However, why throw a bunch of money into a v6 ford, simply to get your doors blown off by someone with a GT that spent about half the money to go twice as fast. Think about the cost/benefit. Yeah my stock 5.0 is not any faster than my grandpa's 2002 v6 mustang, but guess what? I paid a hell of a lot less for my car than he did his.

Mostly because I have friends who have as much or less into their V6 t-birds and will blow the doors off of a lot of 5.0 Mustangs that are comparibly equipped. Not to mention the one does pretty good in the twisties. If spent properly, a V6 powered car/truck will do just as well as any v8 powered car and be more efficient doing it. DOn't get me wrong, there's no replacement for displacement, but it's not always the best way to go for everyone.

Get alot of nitrous, two of the big bottles. I mean what do have to lose?

This 'modding v6 at all', or 'get a v8' arguement can be viewed in many ways......

Well, you guys are all telling him it's a waste of time to mod a V6 stang, I say go for it. It's different, and not many people cruisin' the local "hot spots" would expect a V6 to be quick at all.

                          Hmm...

Well, so far I've got 2 replies that are related to the questions I'm asking. I am rather dissapointed with those of you who have posted saying it is a waste of my time to mod up a V6. First off, who cares if I ro someone else wants to mod up a V6? It's still a mustang and it is a mustang site. I know this topic has been played out, but as soon as I ask a question someone brings it up. It is irritating to ask a valid question and then have the entire post to get loaded with bullshit about how crappy one car is compared to another. Why didn't I save up and just get a gt? Well, First off I don't care if it's a GT or not; I love my car and plan on doing to it what I will. Second, I'm a 22 year old college student. Ever check out the insurance on that with limited time to work? Plus, im my opinion, it would mean a hell of a lot more if one could get a V6 to take a Modded GT (Seen it done plenty of times). I may not get that far with mods, but serious, this is a mustang forum. I asked for some input and you guys pretty much just shot it down. Thanks PHRANQUY and fastang for understanding where I'm coming from. To you other guys, I can also see where you are coming from but on the same token a Cobra owner could say the same of a GT that you guys just said about the V6. Ok, now I don't mean to cause trouble and I hate this argument and am sick of it as much as everyone else but I wasn't the one who brought it up and started it. I say lets bring this stupid thign to a stop and go back to talking about differential setups please. Also, I would like to point out that I'm not offend by any V6 modding bashing, it's just your opinion, I just wanted to get this thread back on topic

                          Cheers,
                          James

P.S if anyoen feels dissed or offended by anythign I've said, lets keep it off the boards. If you feel like ya want to say something thats not constructive I'd rather you send me a PM about it.

I guess i thought you were goin' with 4.10's before, but anyways...

I guess I would go with a limited slip carrier, but if you can spend the money on it, and it's available (your's is a 7.5" right?) get a cone type carrier. They are a little more expensive, but I don't think they wear out as quickly.

                            Edit:
I understand what you mean about modding your car though too. I often have people say "Why not buy a Mustang?" and I always ahve to tell them how much I dislike the way they ride, and don't wanna pay the insurance premiums. I probably pay a lot less for full coverage on two vehicals than ost of these guys might think, and one doesn't even run right now.

Wrong the cones do wear out just as quick , are the same price and are NOT rebuildable, so when its worn out, ante up the big cash cuz its time for a new complete unit. The clutch type, ~60 in clutches and your off and running.

You do realize that if you have an open diff, and you put gears in it, you will burn ONE tire........ A posi, limited slip are the same thing.... two diffent names for the same part. Posi, limited slip etc, the power gets to BOTH rear tires......... IE better traction, you actually go somewhere not just sit and spin.
