    Garage Heaters

With so many options out there what is the most efficient heater for my garage. Its around a 1050sq. ft attached garage 10 foot ceilings fully insulated and rocked, doors also insulated. Want a vented unit that i can hang. Also i plan to set it around 40 degrees most of the time and turn it up when working in the garage would think around 60 degrees. What size would i need see some that say around 60 to 80k? Natural gas, electric or is there a more cost effective way to heat the space?

    Thanks,
    John

Natural gas will always be the best option for price and comfort/no smell etc

A 75k unit from Fleet Farm has served me well. 12' ceiling same square footage. I keep it at 68º in the winter. Really wish I had gone radiant heat though. Next garage will be in floor for sure.

I used a home furnace high efficiency. Works great. Mounted to ceiling plumbed outside. Works great. Keep it at 40.

I asked my local heating outfit about efficient garage heaters and he said they are all 80% efficient unless you install a home furnace in the garage*edit- when talking forced air*. He only suggested installing a home furnace if you are going to keep it above 50F at all times due to added condensation that occurs when you run it too cold.

Thanks for the info looks like ill do natural gas forced air vented unit as i am understanding this will be cheaper than the electric. Just moved to RF so ill double check once i see what i am paying for gas and electric. I only want to spend 1000 max on the unit. Less around 700 would be better tho. Any recommendations on a brand see mr heat, modine( i think it is) and a few others. Also any of you have any issues with the condensation as i will be getting back to restoring cars and working with bare metal often. I do plan to install a fan to circulate the air.

By "restoring cars", are you including lots of paint work or other fume generating tasks? Hanging furnaces are great and I considered one, but was worried about a pilot flame when there would be flammable air in the shop. I ended up putting a home style setup on the back side of a wall (in another stall) and ducting the heat in. I also used an explosion proof fan for venting the air out whenever I have a lot fumes. It's prolly overkill, but I hate taking chances.

I dont think any of the modern hanging unit heaters for garages use a pilot light. I could be wrong..... but I'm pretty sure most are electronic ignition with power vents.

What are the rules in regards to wood stoves within city limits? I've heard both ways, but can't seem to find anything in writing either way as to what's "legal" and what isn't.

Depends on the city. I had to remove mine as per state farm insurance though

I'd say your insurance is going to be the issue more than the city.

I heated my shop with wood and painted dozens of cars. Paint fumes and an open flame are not a problem with proper ventillation

I need a gas-line routed from my home meter to detached garage. If any of you brehs have had this done what can i expect for cost, yes it needs to be buried....?

How far of a run? I ran my own 60' trench for $45. The cost of a pick axe that I needed. Plumber brah made all of the connections and got mine working for a couple hundred if I remember correctly
