    '01 f150 rear end bearings / gears

    so,
I needed to replace the seals in my truck, and I figure, as long as I'm that far in, I should do the bearings too (200k miles).

I get everything back together and the right rear is howlin like a mother @#$.

    F

so, I get a new seal, crack it open again, and sure enough, the !@#$bearing is letters out. Apparently my mechanic did not know it's supposed to be letters in ??
so, I pull it out, punch it back in the correct way, refill the fluid, take 'er for a drive and sure enough, still howlin.

    crap.

so, WT... did I do wrong ?!?

I would have taken it back to the mechanic that you paid to do it the first time.

Other than being magnetized on one side for ABS the bearings don't care which way they go. Ooops, found out the hard way on a customers Scion, do the paper clip test on them all now.

OP: Are you talking about the bearing at the end of the axle tube that supports the axle shaft? Most of the time if the bearing goes bad, it ends up wearing into the axle shaft and leaving pits etc. The axles usually need to be replaced when this happens.

They don't make helper bearings for the fords like they do the chevys?

                    no,
it didn't need bearings when i started, only seals, but i figured i'd jus do 'em at the same time.

and, no, it's jus the one bearing.

if it needed seals... the bearings were bad. the seals last longer then the bearing 99% of the time.
