    Carbbed 4 Pooper Idle issues....

    86 2.0 Carbed 4 pooper...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Won't stay popping..

I would like to stay with the original engine simply for gas mileage etc....

    What has been replaced:

    Plugs
    Wires
    Fuel Pump
    Fuel filter
    Cap
    Rotor

I screwed up on the carb rebuild (choke doesn't open, can fix with man set up) but it still is running the same way that it was before... it pops off and runs but won't keep an Idle nor a smooth run....

Would this be symtoms of mis-timing, dead holes, or simply carb issues... or maybe all three???

    So lets hear some possibilities...

When I had my 84 Ford Bronco II XLS 2.8 v6, it started losing idle as well. After a while, it got so bad that anytime I pushed in the clutch, I had to keep my foot on the gas or it would die. I finally took the air cleaner off to have a look at the carb while it was running and found that it was leaking gas out of the carb somewhere. So I put some duct tape where I thought I saw the gas leaking out, and that worked fine for like a month. But then it started leaking gas really bad, where I would leave a puddle anytime I stopped, and it was hard to keep the thing idling. So I sold it to some dummy in the cities who paid 3 times as much as it was really worth had it been running in perfect shape.

Have you checked the compression across all three? What is the timing at? Did you double check the firing order (Should be 1-3-4-2) ?

2.0's and 2.3's are notorious for blowing the head gasket between the 2-3 cylinder (but it usually requires A LOT more power to do it). So you could be seeing a loss in compression.

Have you tuned the carb at all? Is it one with an adjustable idle and "richness?" Also, the 2.0 won't idle well if it's not warmed up (at least not without a choke).

If none of that works, I've got a good 2.3 long-block that I'll sell cheap. Bolt on the 2.0 Head/Carb/Header, richen the carb up a little bit and you'd be ready to go.

I guess I'm just taking pot-shots in the dark without being able to hear the car.

In short it sounds like a pop-corn popper... is there a webber set up I could throw on it?

Yes, there is, but it's spendy and not j/y available. Try calling U-Pull or John's and score a different carb. Usually they're still good.

I'm trying to imagine the sound in my head but I can't come up with anything specific. If it's a lighter "pop" then it might really be detonation and you need to back the fuck off the timing. Get a light on there and check it...

i heard that thing for a few seconds when it was on it's last leg before it got sold to you... sounded like it wasn't firing on all cylinders for sure.
do a compression test if you really wanna get into it. but i'd just trash it.
if you do keep it though change that poor oil!!

For me? Aiight. I don't think I have anything that they will fit.

Yes, I mentioned the interchangability above. You could literally bolt on your head/intake/header to the 2.3, richen up the Carb a little bit, and you'd have a fresher short block.
