    Cam shaft issues

I am now on my second camshaft from CompCams. The first one was bent and the cam bearing journals were to big. The one I have now is straight but there are some imperfection on the cam journals. The cam journals are again to big / out of spec. I would send the cam back again but i'm running out of time to get this thing together. From what I have read this is not an uncommon occurrence and the solution is to polish the journals using a crank polisher.

    here are some pictures

my thought is that polishing the journals should remove the imperfections (I can barely feel them with my fingernail) and get the cam journals down to the right size. Any suggestions on a shop that can get this done on short notice? thanks in advance

Who did you get the cam from? I'd keep sending them back till I got a good one. And raise a little hell for all the trouble.

From Comp Cams, I'd love to send it back however I don't have a week to wait to see if I win the camshaft lottery and get something that will work.

maybe it's just the picture but the lobes of the cam look rough?

Could let them know what you've been through, and that it's a time issue now, then ask for them to inspect one and overnight it, then send yours back in a prepaid box. I always ask for a manager or someone that can make that kind of decision before the discussion gets too far.

That is a flat tappet cam. The nasty finish wears off when the cam is broken in.

Flat tappet cams are cast not billet. Imperfections are normal. Most of the time you can clean the jurnels with scotch bright.

When I was building my 429 over 10 years ago the cam i got had the journals too big. Sent it back. the second one was correct. Still running good. Can't remember what brand it was. First time I had seen it.

This. The cam gets work hardened during break in.

They are sending out a new cam next day after it is inspected. I hope this one will work. The customer service has been great but the product is what i'm paying for. It has really set me back time wise.

the last 2 cams from comp were junk. a roller and a flat tappet. lobes were full of pits. new out of the box. the roller was the worst. I would say their quality control is horseshit. I will say the management I talked to handled it no problem but the warranty guy was a complete ass at the place tho.
