need a hand with a distributor install

Hi all I need a hand with a distributor install. Early this year I bought a 93 fox mustang 5.0l that had had the engine professionally rebuilt. About three weeks ago the car just stopped running I did all the normal diagnostics and figured it was either the stator or tfi module. I I replaced the TFI and it made no difference, so I decided that a rebuilt distributor would do the trick. I pulled out my haynes manual and followed the instructions on how to mark the position of the distributor. Then I pulled the old one out and discovered that the professional shop had put in a distributor with a cast gear ans the HO cam destroyed the gears. So I hand turned the engine to TDC and cannot get the new distributor to slip back in is there something I am missing? my dad thinks I somehow need to align the oil pump drive with the cam gear?? not sure any help is appreciated

the picture is of the distributor I pulled not the rebuilt one

that is what my gear looks like also

I turn the rotor back 1 cylinder then it sides right in to the No.1 position

if it is tight in the main bore put a little oil on the "O" ring on the dizzy base and see if it sides in a little easier

Think of all that metal now floating thru the engine.

I would be sticking magnets from transmission services that I forgot to put back in, all over the bottom of the oil pan.

yep hopefully the oil filter caught most of it, when I get it running I will let it warm up and then change the oil and filter, and then I will let it warm up again and change the oil and filter. The way I figure it has been driven for almost 40k miles with that distributor in it and it has been wearing the whole time. if I am wrong then it needs to be rebuilt,... well then it needs a rebuild,..

Think of whirled peas floating in the sky.
That is why people use oil filters.
Do not throw out an old hard drive until you pull out the super magnets.
Stick them to the pan or filter.
