    98 V6 vs 95 GT steering

My 95 is in need of struts/shocks, and has more miles than the '98, but the steering on the '98 doesn't feel as crisp, it feels offcenter and wonders around. The tire wear on the '98 is normal and would indicate it is set up pretty good. I even swapped the 16" wheels with the 17" on the GT. The 17" wheels helped a small amount, but the '95 still drives better. Is there a rack difference between V6 and V8? (the V6 only has 40K miles and has never been in any accidents) Could basic alignment make that much of a difference? Would a bump steer kit help? The car has not been lowered...
