can your fox catch 2nd gear rubber? mine can't :(

ok here's what im working with.

87 gt,306,5 speed, speed pro pistons, maf converted. march CAI, bbk 70mm TB, trickflow upper and lower intake, bbk headers, h pipe, flowmaster 40's, msd 6al, 3.55 gears, 6 puck clutch, lightweigh flywheel. fresh plugs. run 91 octane.

it just doesn't feel fast. first and second gear move pretty good at WOT but after that its not really impressive at all. i can't even catch 2nd gear rubber and i'd think that'd be easy with the amount of bolt ons. i can drop the clutch in second and get her sideways if i'm going around a corner but if im on the highway at like 60 and drop it into 3rd it doesn't really slam me back into the seat.

is this normal? my ranger can get a tiny squeak of 2nd gear rubber, my stang should be able to roast em even with shitty tires.

not sure exactly. the car used to run like it had a cam but i turned the distributor a bit clockwise and it smoothed out a little bit. now today while installing the 70mm TB i found that a huge vacuum line was off on the back of the motor. this made a HUGE difference, idle is smooth and the chugging it used to do at a certain rpm is gone.

So you didn't actually time the engine with a timing light....

you are correct. dont have one but i didnt go cranking the distributor side to side. i move it very, very slowly till it ran the best at idle. a dude at work has a light that we're going to use when he gets back from iowa

Go buy one, craftsman advanced timing light for $70. Actually setting the timing is where i would start.

No shit, playing by ear isn't a good way of timing a car. when you are doing this are you pulling the black plug? otherwise you're just dancing with the computer. I thought I could cheat the system but I pulled into BWW crystal and Punch and a few other guys I think casey was there they timed it for me with a light, I was way off.

If you own a vehicle with a distributor, and you fuck with it frequently, you should own one.

You could get the Snap-on unit. I've checked my Craftsman adv. timing light against a snap-on unit and they were the same.

In any case, the Craftsman light is a hell of a lot better than timing by ear.

You.don't time a fucking engine by turning the distributor til it "sounds right" at idle.
