    Megasquirt Question

Does anybody know what cable is needed to hook up a Megasquirt II to a computer to tune it? My friend is just finishing up a megasquirt build that he started, and I've been looking online for him, and neither one of us can find the cable needed to hook up to the computer. The megasquirt is a 9 prong end, and the computer is either a 15 prong end, or USB end.

Vert might be very helpful here

    Serial cable.

If your computer doesn't have a serial port, you'll need a serial-to-usb adapter.

When we got to my place, I already had a candle burning. It was by "Glade", which I think you pronounce like the singer Sade, because it is an exotic candle that smells just like real pine.

You will have to mess with the port settings on the computer and MS to get it to connect through the adaptor. I would get the adaptor from DIYautotune, that one has the best success rate for communication.

I agree with this. Also, Megatune is more forgiving with the adapter, Tuner Studio can be a pain in the ass sometimes.

It's going to have to be a Serial to USB cable. I found it on DIY for $22.50 + shipping from somewhere in Europe, or they have one at Best Buy for $36 as well...any idea if the best buy model will work??

There are two different popular adapters. The one you want is the FTDI version. Sometimes you can find out on the vendor's site what chip to use.

Or go on DIY and order the built-in chip... get rid of serial altogether.

                  GM 60 degree motor, I can't remember if it's a 3.4 or a 3.8.

Has he bench tested it with a JimStim or anything similar first? MegaSquirts aren't made of magic ... you'll need/want to get a bin on there.

Whole system has been run before with the current engine and tranny. He bought the engine/tranny/megasquirt ready to drop in and go, but when he test drove the car before it ran a little funny, so he changed a few things on his DIY tune....I really don't know what he did, computers are not my forte.

Looked at it immediately, then found that part in stock at best buy. I've been reading some people say that you need the megasquirt model cable, and others say any cable will work, so now I'm trying to research that portion.

If you don't want to wait for shipping, get one for $20 from Micro Center in SLP.

I was checking them out too...radioshack referred me to them I just never go into that area. I'm always in Minneapolis, or quite a bit north of the cities. Best buy has these too, and we might even have a bunch at my Dad's shop...
